A couple days ago I picked up a brand new 18”, tried to rationalize my purchase to myself, when I like the ash catcher, thermometer, and hinged grates in the 22…
I spent $108 on the 18”, then found the 22” on Marketplace for $85, that’s a no brainer purchase…
I originally intended to keep both, but putting them side by side, it’s clear the difference isn’t worth keeping both
The charcoal grate is rusty in the 22, and the grill grates could stand a good cleaning, but nothing a good scrubbing with a green scrub pad won’t fix, worst case, they can be replaced.
So the 18’s going back and I’m probably going to use some of the refund money for at least a new cook grate, maybe a second coal grate so I can use both and make a “grid” for the coals…

The 18″ is a bit small for smoking things on it. Even a snake is difficult in an 18″ because it’s too close and will light the other side. Other than smoking, it’s perfectly fine. I love mine.

Do yourself a favor with the 22″ and get a stainless grate. It’ll be the last grate you ever need. Hunsaker has great options, including a stainless GBS-compatible grate and a no-frills basic grate. SnS Grills also has some good options for stainless grates.

The 18 inch has 254 sq. in. of space. The 22 inch has 380 sq. in. of space.

Those 4 inches add an extra 50% surface area.
