Shlissel Challah or Key shaped challah

❤️❤️Hello my friend❤️❤️

I hope you are doing AMAZING !

As Orthodox Jews we have a long standing custom to bake key shaped challah ( also called shlissel challah by our Hasidic and Ashkenazi sisters ) for the 1st Shabbat after Pesach or Passover as this period is an opportune time to pray to G.od for Him to give us the “key” for success in all realms of life whether financial , health, finding a soulmate, recovery ❤️‍🩹 ,….

To honour this wonderful tradition I will go LIVE this Friday May 3rd at 1PM EST to share with you some of my favourite key shaped challah designs.
It will be a wonderful time for me to spend with you where you can ask me all the questions you want about challah, about being an orthodox Sephardic Jewish woman and anything in between!
I hope to see you then

Xoxoox. Your Sara Malka

🐟KOSHER MEAL PREP FOR THE WEEK 5 full meals! 🐟

🐔 WHAT I PREPARE FOR SHABBAT **FULL MEALS *** and CLEAN WITH ME! 🐔

it’s working I hope so okay does that work can anybody oh I’m sorry if it’s moving does that work can anybody hear me time to pick for tonight he kind of looks like me why do I just one moment I don’t know why there was music yay yay yay we’re working woohoo well you know what okay sorry sorry sorry sorry I was like almost crying with my phone okay so here we go let me go on the other one oh my goodness so exciting just one moment I’ll be with you in one moment I was like almost crying with my phone okay so here we go all right and now I see you with the comments okay we’re set woohoo hi everybody thank you so so much for uh being here it really really means so much to me as you can imagine I am working from home today uh and therefore I have a bit of time to spend YooHoo okay so we go if you’re wondering why there’s nothing here we go there are my hands we’re going to start hi hi Erica hi everybody I’m so grateful you are here so we’re going to start right away I am going to do all the balls that I’m going to use are 75 G 75 G and okay there’s a bit of a delay okay how’s everybody hi shot hi kenetta so happy to see you all just going to push that away okay hello Erica I hope I seeing everybody okay I’m so excited Sean also to be here every day is a [Laughter] miracle we are back amazing I don’t know why it froze if it freeze again please let me know hopefully it will not okay hello Mary hello Ros okay is everything working again I hope so that’s the beauty of doing a live okay so I’m using I’m going to do six strands for the head of my uh I’m sure that there are more comments coming in but unfortunately my screen is Frozen Okay so the the the base to do a or a in form or in the shape of a key is because it’s an auspicious time we are starting to count the OM which are uh 50 days between the second day of P to the first day of shat and during that time we count the and just after P they say it is a time for uh opening the gates OFA beautiful right here all right so can you tell me the significance of the key shape yes I can absolutely give you um Timberwolf the significance so the significance once again is that it’s the time that God to pray to God for him to give us uh the keys to open because the they say that the um Heavens are open and are are more uh if you want God is more it’s a pro it’s a good okay are we good we’re back okay we’re good good I really don’t know why it freezes if anybody knows why it freezes please let me know I would absolutely love to know why okay I think we’re good back back back we we we okay here we go so I’m just creating the head of my of my and I just saw somebody who said I have a question un related to Kal what is the Shabbat Queen what does that mean so Mary what it means is that every shabat we receive um the if you want the presence so God is is the king of the of the world if you want and we receive the Shabbat which is like his Queen so this is what we do and this is why it’s some call it the Shabbat Queen okay beautiful yay I’m so happy hi Gina hi Debbie hi Gail hi everybody once in a while I’m going to touch my phone for it not to freeze because I think that’s the issue okay so what I’m going to do is simply place my Kal like this but what I’m going to do is be smart and place it already on my uh cookie sheet with the parchment paper because every year I do the same thing I create a design and then afterwards I want to um to change it to put it on the the cookie sheet and then everything moves okay so here again super simple I simply put everything like this so I put five here and what I’m going to do is that I am going to use this one does that work I’m so happy to see you too Benny do you need of use maybe you need higher I don’t know it’s a good question Ginger I’m not sure and in the middle what I’m going to do is simply do a snake I know it is not very complicated but it makes a very beautiful kala okay so I’m just going to make sure that they touch each other sorry again if it moves I just want to touch the screen hi hi Sarah I was curious and doing some exploring trying to find the different places you visited would um would the cidic neighborhood happen to be in utrront myland yes yes yes some of the cidic communities here are in ultramont or the myland and also the deim area okay beautiful snakes yes I know so here we go this is the base do you see that’s the head of our key if you want yes yes yes Claudia hi Claudia okay does it work now a marble Bo yeah absolutely I use a marble B uh board because it’s so easy to roll my kala this is why I use it okay so now that I did the head see very easy I just did took those are 75 G each this one in the middle too and what I’m going to do is that I am going to take a bit of dough and I’m going to do small balls I’m telling you so easy yet in my opinion pretty got a moment on lunch to visit with my yay Hannibal I’m so happy you’re here so I’m going to just put it in the middle and just fold it like this another Bowl hi shushi so happy you’re here hi Danielle Shalom manishma so I just put a ball and I put them in the middle it’s simple but it just adds a little bit of something something hi Abigail I know you’ve told us before but what kind of doctor so my specialty is a Pediatric Intensive Care so intensive care for the children sah I made your chicken schle and now it’s a weekly staple you are the bomb cook thank you Busa that’s so nice so as you can see there’s nothing scientific about my method of putting a little ball in the middle of my Kal Danielle so happy and then I put here the last one okay okay so this is going to be my head I just make sure that every piece are going to be touching each other that’s all I need to do this way when it uh fluffs up it’s going to be okay sorry I don’t know how people do it I’m really not gifted for that sorry I’m really not gifted for that sorry um okay so now I’m going to do the body of the I’m going to use 100 G balls thank you to let me know that you are back I’m doing it a bit faster usually you know I would use my rolling pin to make braids that are nicer but we are a bit pressed for time I do have a patient that I need to call around two okay it’s looping no sound now do you hear me we’re good Mary we have sound I hear myself which is in the background a little bit okay so I’m making Fast strands okay again usually I would make them more beautiful s the best part is the live thank you shushi I just wanted to share a little bit about this tradition I really like it and you know some P some people say that no it’s uh you know it’s not founded in the it’s not um tradition that has been there for a long time but actually it is I know my parents my parents-in-law in Morocco uh also did them my parents did them too so it’s a a really a beautiful tradition in my opinion okay so what I’m doing is simply dist how to make this this live not stop all the time okay very good beautiful so now I’m going to make my regular twist kala I should have a little reminder to touch the upper screen because as you can imagine I have a screen there and I have a screen in front of me to be able to see your chat while I’m filming so okay so what I’m going to do now is a Twist kala I’ve showed you many many times so glad things are comaling down for you when you weren’t on YouTube posting I honestly thought something was wrong oh no I’m so sorry you know the truth is that because I don’t post now every week because it was just too much and really I I couldn’t handle everything YouTube is is nicely um uh putting me uh on a timeout and he they don’t promote my videos anymore so a lot of people don’t even know that I’m publishing videos so H beautiful yes yes animal you’re right we can start the family tradition absolutely so what I’m going to do is I am going to braid a Twist so I’m going to take the first trand put it next to the second Strand and take the first one on the other side and put it in the middle okay and I repeat so the first one next to the second the first one on the other side then in the middle oh did I forget to twist I forgot to twist sorry starting again so here putting one then the other one then twist okay one the other one and twist the first one we turn and twist I’m going to go up don’t worry if it’s not super pretty now it’s going to we’re going to cover it up the first one on the right goes the second to the left we take the first one and we T twist it to the third one okay and I continue and then for the end I just simply roll the end okay why does YouTube does that because they want for the creators to be on the platform all the time so if you’re not there every week for sure you’re punished if you go if you look any big YouTubers they publish at least once a week and uh some even twice a week okay so I go back with the head that we did as you can see it already grew a little bit and now we’re going to put the head of our key see it doesn’t matter if it’s not perfect okay and I put this end the fatter end if you want on top to connect everything okay and we can even add a little ball of dough H you are a big YouTube start nah no I’m I’m very aware I’m not so not a big big uh big player for YouTube but it’s okay I love so much my community and if I can help even one person I’m so glad that I can okay beautiful so we can adjust we can turn it here this one I’m going to put it down a little bit to stick better okay so how how is it so far Sarah your schedule is fine with us a thank you shushi it begins like Yay I’m happy oh buzza you’re so cute okay so now okay I’m going to put it there sorry I didn’t see that it was not centered at all okay so now do you see we have the head of a key and we have the body of a key and to make it prettier we can also fluff it once again it does not matter how it looks it’s going to bake beautifully okay okay so now for the the key part sah I love and look forward to say oh thank you and so for the key part because you know a key needs um in French we call them how do you call it in English I would love to know thank you jenya Thank you Lisa gorgeous yay I’m happy and don’t worry once again we’re going to put the egg wash on top we’re going to decorate it so no problem there the teeth a teeth the teeth of the key oh okay okay the shank shank or teeth okay how many language do you speak and how did you come to learn them so my native Tong the first tongue that or language that I have learned was actually uh German then actually alz because my um my grandmother my a big story my father um my father was uh I should explain just one moment I’m going to go back to the question about the language so what I do is simply sorry I should have explained better is that I simply do like a a stretching thing I can do it on the side push it here okay beautiful and what I’m going to do is simply twist it really nothing to call home about this is so easy to make that was my point you see some they’re like so elaborate and you’re like oo how can I do that okay and you’re going to I simply okay I think we’re good okay thank you Abigail so much and thank you for everybody that are bringing your friends and talking about this channel again it comes from my heart I love spending time with you I love explaining what we do so once again I just took a long strand I folded in two and then I’m doing the second part of the key and again I take the loop and I put it down okay okay hi I love your channel I’m not Jewish I’m Greek Orthodox but love watching your tradition and daily activities with your beautiful family thank you Mary that’s so nice so that’s it so this is our key should we put the the second one here maybe it’s prettier but we have to take in consideration it’s going to fluff up okay so that’s it yes c a few minutes this one looks great wonderful so how about good thumbs up thumbs down what do you think we’re good uh s Sarah I had a reactor watch your oh I have to rewatch your morning routine video as if it was advice for own oh thank you okay so that’s our first one but rest assured we’re going to decorate it and things like that but this is a basic one yeah easy easy as you saw the only part that perhaps was a bit more challenging was the braiding I made many many videos with this technique so you can all see them and otherwise it was just 75 G strand with a little ball of dough in the middle and voila okay so this is the first one and of course as you know to make make sure that it stays nice and we’re going to let it rise for about 45 minutes so I’m going to put it on the side okay see this time I organize myself I have to touch the screen all the time okay beautiful okay gorgeous so now what I took is again 75 G per uh ball shabat Shalom from Brazil beautiful sending you love it h oh Mary I missed your message what H what is happening is everything okay sweetie Detroit Richards I hope that now it’s good so I’m just rolling them to make balls I should put myself a little bit straighter but I’m afraid I’m going to move and then everybody’s going to go away with my luck and Technology okay beautiful what’s for dinner tonight well tonight I’m going to make um some Moroccan bullet well I made Moroccan bullette with some puree or potato puree yeah and um I made some uh broccoli that’s for today tonight with fish of course rocking fish very good um gorgeous Well everybody’s saying prayers for Mary so Mary I don’t know what oh Mary yay God willing it will go so well and it’s going to work and it’s going to be such a beautiful and healthy baby God willing amen amen amen very good so now I did my little ball you’re so sweet CIA I don’t it’s not a sacrifice let me let me tell you you know sometimes I dream of of just being a full-time Creator I know right it’s terrible to say that but really I do I love love love it’s such a beautiful outlet and I think that I’ve been working for like 20 plus years between the working and the studies so that would be a nice break too okay so here we go amen Daniel absolutely oh the sound is messed up are we back on okay we’re not okay I hope we’re okay I’m going to move my phone a little bit please I hope it works okay we [Laughter] go oh thank you bu okay so easy peasy like I told you you just make balls I like to make them again 75 G is pretty much what I like to do I did what I told you I shouldn’t do which is to create my head but not on my cookie sheet oh and quick tip for your um for your uh parchment paper to stick you put a bit of water and voila okay so I’m going to redo the head of Mya you can make them make it as beautiful and perfect as you want or not okay what I like to do is to have um to have really a like a a pattern if you want okay here we we go simple again I’m not going for complicated today I’m just going for simple and easy to make for everyone if you want to try to have an easy time to do so okay do you grease the parchment no I don’t I don’t I’ve never done it in my life and and thank God it doesn’t stick so okay beautiful um beautiful so now I did the head you saw how easy once again it’s with um with the 75 G balls I’m going to put it aside and cover it to keep everything nice and O sorry okay and here exactly and don’t use use uh don’t use uh wax paper okay thank you Rebecca thank you so much I’m still using them and this is the issue with this one is that if you don’t um if you do not um really stick the ball one with the other it’s going to break so to avoid that I’m just going to change my tactic and go with a a quick braid thank you for taking us along with you to make this thank you for sharing your culture oh thank you Elizabeth my D is rise up now but you inspired me to do that thank you from Quebec oh thank you for the reminder Lisa to poke my phone thank you you love my channel that’s so nice sah I’m curious to know if you are J faric or ashkanazi before getting married my family is very mixed so I have some spari I have some ashkanazi uh I have my family is spread between Japan to to the West Coast pretty much hi vgo I’m so happy you’re here from Malaysia thank you Jude dude okay this is terrible so this is I’m I’m going to show you something for a second this is what happened right I rolled it I didn’t have I didn’t let it relax and this is what happens I try to right away uh do a strand with it and if you can see it’s terrible the surface is terrible yes it is kala Joe okay I’m going to try to so once I I let them relax a little bit they’re going to be uh more helpful um hi ver I’m doing some kala which is a tradition it’s a Kala in ashkanazi oric circle but we call it um otherwise a Kala in a shape of a key it’s a tradition that we have the Shabbat just after Passover to do that because it’s an opportune time to pray for God to open or to give us the key to um what we call parasa B everything that we need yes Debbie thank you I am touching my phone I hope that it’s better now it didn’t cut what’s that’s average length perfect that thank you so this is the difference see this I took my time I didn’t rush it and this is what happened s when I rush it and I didn’t let the gluten relax a little bit before I played with it not good and okay no it’s terrible I can’t use it so I’m going to use another bow it’s really they’re too terrible they’re they’re limit to my madness oh mazalov I’m so happy it was the first time that you made your kitchen kosher good for you thank you growth in the dirt from Memphis wow that is a part part of the United States I didn’t go to okay better sorry I’m possibly German polish and Jewish I’m supposedly ashkanazi oh beautiful okay there you go I know the strands are pretty horrible but it’s okay we’re going to manage it okay I’m touching my screen thank you to remind me to uh to touch my screen this way it doesn’t uh freeze okay here we go so we’re going to do just a simple four strand but long one the goal is to make a long one okay so what we’re going to do is sing the song of our of uh our girls do you remember anybody do you remember um what is the song on what uh what tune is the song woo hello lovely in my lunch break Oh yay the honest 50s love it so the song is r r row your boat but we’re going to do a second to the top first in the middle second to the top first in the middle oh yeah I see that Blake you’re on fire second to the top first in the middle second to the top first in the middle and we continue beautiful I’m so happy everybody’s talking in the chat everybody’s like knowing each other I love it okay so that is going to be my uh the body of my key and the fun thing is because we we did a a strand like that and some part are ugly some are nicer I can roll and see which part is better well I think that this one is pretty is pretty good what do you think very good uh promise me to see how much of what I had in my kitchen was kosher ended up cleaning out my cupboard all right Shelly I’m so happy so I bring back the head of my key I touch my screen okay uh I know you mentioned it before but can remind me why the kala is braided again so there are different explanation of why we braid the kala in general some say it’s to show the unity within all the different uh groups of uh within within so Le Coen is some Sayes to remind us of Abraham and yob some say it’s for the mother there are many many many many explanations beautiful I’m just going to see Shalom from Malawi H beautiful so that’s what I’m going to do I’m going to just press it up a little bit do Ju see it that it’s a circle or not so much I think I I moved it too much but what I Tred to do is align this this is my goal okay I’m moving the screen okay okay and then we’re going to do the teeth of the key Connie you sung this the the song Beautiful seven strands look at you you’re an expert okay and I’m doing the same thing for the teeth of the the key beautiful and so here I put the longer one here and I twist it and I take the a smaller piece and I do the other one you could do also squares if you want instead of of little twisties it’s a sunflower I agree and you’re going to see in a minute that we are going to even add a bit more flare to it okay I’m doing it fast but of course you would take time and you would make it way more pretty than what I’m doing but I just want to give you a general idea okay this and this and now the key yeah now it’s a key beautiful but what I’m going to do I’m going to add a little something something in the middle to make everything hold so this is a bow of 100 gram I’m so happy you’re here mama KK okay I’m having too much fun this is why not looking at the screen I love the your your little emoji and this is way too [Laughter] big beautiful thank you Abigail you’re so good please remind me to to touch the screen guys I’m just going to roll this let it um just relax a little bit because otherwise I’m going to break it okay oh it’s frozen Felicia no Felicia or Felicia okay so what I’m going to do is that I’m going to do a bigger snake and I’m going to flatten it a little bit to take a bit more space see what happened because I didn’t let it relax it recoiled so I’m going to try to do a bit um will you do separation blessing um not today because I prepared the dough before but the blessing is Hashem that’s for us fori but ashkanazi they would say um okay that’s a better size okay very good oh middle see super simple very good so that’s it that’s the other one okay and because I want to show you a little bit how I would decorate it here is the first one poke phone yes thank you I love the Poke phone it’s 151 yes thank you you are so nice everybody really so nice to remind me the time and to poke my phone okay so here is our first one okay and what I’m going to do is that I’m going to do quickly an egg wash as you know what I do is simply break an egg verified before of course to make sure that there’s no blood spot in the yellow of the egg and then I’m going to do the other one and I’m not doing both the same because if the second one has a blot spot then I would have to throw both which is a bit ridiculous I’m here I take a bit of sea salt I’m so grateful I have time to decorate a little bit with you guys thank you I’m putting sea salt as you can see there’s a huge piece of salt which is a bit terrible okay yes exactly Gail it has quite risen so I just put the sorry the egg with the salt poke the Poke the screen thank you for the reminder yes River Rain I am I am going to do um it’s been a very long time I didn’t do uh some you know cooking with you so the next one is going to be cooking video so now what I’m doing is I’m applying my egg wash this is by the way the best um the best uh ptis how do you call it brush pastry brush I’m going to go with pastry brush we unicorn I speak French English Spanish Italian German Yiddish and Alan yes no blood spot exactly I’m touching the phone okay here doing that yes P brush beautiful there are some Expressions really even though I think I I like I can I can defend myself in English there are some Expressions that I almost purely um use in French so I don’t know the English one so I create words okay beautiful so now touching the screen and making sure is a brush silicone yes because um the natural bristles are made of B bore hair so I’m never sure if it’s good or not good so I avoid okay next stop the decoration okay so here are the three that I’m going to use black sesame seed white sesame seed and kala topping it’s just because it in my opinion makes a a nice combination okay very good so now yes five minutes I love that everybody’s so good with time so what I’m going to do now is that I’m going to decorate it very simply because we don’t have a lot of time this is water so I’m going to start with the black I’m going to put some seed in my hand I’m going to wet my finger I don’t know if you see this maybe not H let me push everything okay how about this better are we good touch the screen yes so what I’m going to do is I’m going to take my finger dip it in water and then dip it in the seeds okay and I’m going to put it in a circle you know what I don’t know do we do Circle or sides M I’m making kala a key shaped kala what do we do you vote do we do it on the side or on the middle in the middle yes exactly that’s how I get to stuff to to stay sticky so what do you think do we do on the side in the circle touch a screen thank you Mary middle okay I’m going for the middle so again I wet my finger and then I go in the middle poop okay so now I’m going to uh do the opposite just to make a pattern so once again I put it in the the water put my finger in the seeds and Boop in the middle okay it looks tribal all right okay so now we have to decide are we going to let the key um Plaine or do we decorate it as well what do you think you like the sound effect good Boop yes so what do you think do we put it in the do we decorate here or not so much because otherwise I’m going to change the seeds um ba DEC we decorate okay so here we go so now what I’m going to do is that I’m going to start to decorate the twist that’s why I like to do the twist with this one so because we have three kinds of seeds we’re going to do one two three we all decorate beautiful I’m touching the screen I’m sorry if you’re moving so we’re going to do because we are black black H then I think I’m going to do black here what do you think or here do we do black here let’s try I’m going to add a bit of seeds okay good good I’m happy that we’re like baking together so I again I put my finger but this time I’m going to put it more obviously because I want to do a line and then I’m going to put it here Boop okay same thing because I’m going to do one two 3 one two three so here so one two and yeah one two and three so I’m going to finish with black to again I put my seed I wet my finger I put it in I put more because I want to do a line Boop there we go okay black yeah I’m going to color the other middle I just wanted to have just one seed at a time I think anyway we we’ll see I I’ll I’ll put it back okay now that we have done this one I think that most probably we’re going to do these do we want a black here maybe we feel the black and we do black black and then white white black black white white the Boop is important very important it’s crucial what do you think we decorate the key perfect do we do white white and black on top oh I feel the black yeah I think so okay here we go so here I’m going to do here Boop oh yeah very good advice thank you so much very good I’m touching the phone okay here we go there we go so black black black okay and now we’re going to go with white same thing I’m taking here white finger in the water but this time is just the tip because I want the tip here Boop okay and here again Boop okay I’m going to add a little bit more here boop boop boop boop oop okay perfect how’s that s time to call your patient yeah I have already sent a message that to my secretary to say that I’m going to be late yeah whoop whoop okay so and then in the middle oh we’re going to do this first because we don’t want to use too many uh seeds Shalom scho okay beautiful and here so we’re going to start I think we’re going to go here okay again tip of the finger here because we did a ball come on you were so good you knew it was going to be perfect okay and then I’m going to go white here I’m going to do a line here again water a lot of finger because I’m doing a line here okay so that’s it for the white okay and here so we’re going to go with the hoping because it’s a mixed of both I’m going to do a line was crazy yeah okay so here we go so now I’m going to do a Boop in the middle so just the tip of my finger Boop in the middle and here Boop okay I’m going to put a bit more boop boop okay and now I’m going to do a line okay same thing my finger is wet I do a line and I put it okay same thing I put I put my seeds really I I form a line I wet everything and put it to do a line okay okay what do you think are we good looks like bigle topping yes exactly this is exactly that we call it kala topping but it can be bigel topping same thing okay so that’s it that’s that’s pretty much what I would do with this one would you want for me to add anything are we good should we change beautiful very pretty all right all right all right all right I’m going to put it more in the middle this way we can see and it’s really a team about uh 30 to 35 minutes for everything until golden and I’ll post on our um on the Community page the results of our kala okay it’s perfect we leave it like that Abigail amazing so again this is a tradition that has been um passed on for many many many many years we’re talking centuries it is because it’s a an auspicious time just after we went out if you want of the desert of of Egypt I’m sorry into the desert and we succeeded and therefore this is why we do Keys um kala shaped in keys or some put a key in the Kalam of course wrapped in aluminum foil and uh and because we want we pray to God that he opens up he gives us the keys for success and everything that we need so today I’m going to finish the live on not only saying not not forgetting I’m sorry to say thank you for being work I pray with all my heart that whatever you’re experiencing right now that it shall pass if it’s a difficulty that if you’re doing beautifully well then for you to continue being blessed whether in parasa or money whether in success whether in shim or you know finding your soulmate I pray with all my heart that all your desires uh are going to be fulfilled and that God always accompany accompany you in everything that you do know that you are loved and you are enough just the way you are and that is something that is so necessary for us to remind ourselves because some a lot of time we feel that we fall short but no you are amazing and I’m so grateful you were here with me today to spend about an hour together and I’m sorry about the te technical difficulties but please please 5. If there is a tiny brown dot in the egg white, is that a blood spot or is it only in the yolk that blood spots occur?

  6. THay look beutiful! Do you have any videos of challah with the little dipping dishes baked in that you put sauces in?

  8. Hi Sara Finally got to watch your video (I’m In the UK so the times don’t always work😢!) which was brilliant. You always sound so happy and upbeat it’s a pleasure to watch you. Thank you for brightening up my day and just as you pray for all of us, I pray for you and your family too. 💜🙏💜😢

  9. There are no Jewish people where I live. I find it very sad. I am a Latter-day Saint and would love to have a Jewish family to commune with. Most of our Jews live in Melbourne, though some live in Adelaide. Both are a long way from me. Blessing to you, your family and the babies in your care. ❤

  10. You know I’m running a few days behind as usual, but I really enjoyed spending time with you during your Shlissel challah bake Sara! Especially I want to give a loud AMEN to all of your prayers at the end. Sending love and blessings to this sweet community!!!
