This was the original location for Kreuz’s before the family split up the business.

Just went to both Kreuz and Smitty’s last weekend back to back.
I will say Smitty’s had the best sausage I’ve ever had – insanely juicy and flavorful. The brisket and ribs were fine, but a level below Kreuz. Kreuz sides blew Smitty’s out of the water.

It’s 2024, Terry Blacks and Barbs. Time has passed the old guard by.

I remember standing in front of those pits in about 1981 Kreuz Market, If you were standing in line and got stuck in front of them, your face would almost melt.

That fire has been burning a long time.

Nothing like walking in during the middle of summer into a searing blaze of heat. And then stuffing your face. And walking out smelling like you just committed arson.
Ehh. Lockhart knows, the whole town smells like barbecue.

This sub should just be renamed bbq because that’s about the only thing Austin does better than anywhere else

Smitty’s was my first Texas bbq and experience and it was perfect.

Smittys used to be my favorite until the pandemic hit. After that the meat quality changed drastically and was never the same. Barbs bq is where it’s at now.

Smittys calls for an early part of the day arrival. Eating late…the food isnt what it used to. Been coming here since 90’s when it was Kreuz.

Smoking room has great ambiance but the BBQ sucks dick. Sausage is good though.
KaiBaird
They have a prime rib which is absolutely incredible.
ASU_SexDevil
And this is why Lockhart is the BBQ capital.
Smittys has my favorite sausage

Unpopular opinion, but I found all of the bbq joints in Lockhart average at best besides the new Terry Blacks. La Barbecue, Terry Blacks, Franklin are way better.

I took a CARTS ~~short~~ van bus to Lockhart recently and stopped by Smitty’s:
Leave in the morning or at 12:15p from the East side bus plaza and come back a few hours later. Drops off by the HEB downtown Lockhart and it’s an easy walk to Smitty’s. Have a beer at Old Pal too.
East side bus plaza will make you question the sanity of this idea but other than it’s fine. My little van bus only had 2 other people on it and one was a volunteer for at the VA clinic (the only stop before you get to Lockhart).
