So I filled up the KJ all the way with charcoal and finished a long cook (6 hours) and my charcoal basket looks like the pictures attached. Vents are closed and grill is cooling down slowly, I shook the charcoal basket and ashes started flying. Do I wait until the grill is cool and shake the basket to shake off excess ash? Or what would be the best recommendation to help preserve charcoal for the next cook?

I usually let it cool and give it a shake the next day. Clean out the ask drawer and you’re good to go again. If need be, I will put some new charcoal on top to fill it up again. If you want to add wood chunks, just work it in there.
Did you remove the cast iron grate?
I just deal with it when I start my next cook. Shake out the basket, take it out and clean out the ash can. Add fresh charcoal and wood and get the next one going.
U Wana wait a full day or 2. I usually just leave it till the next cook
It’s all good, you just close the vents when you’re done and the fire will go out, you can shake the ask and clean the next cook, you can relight the old lump too, just a add a little fresh.
