this is Master Chef all stars out of the frying pan and into the fire tonight three teams go head-to-head in a quick fire Showdown I think it’s just really overwhelming being back here in the kitchen and cooking competitively again four rounds four Cuisines and $20,000 up for GRS another day another charity dollar as the country’s best are put to the table I’m seriously out of my [Music] dead flame like a bright shooting star in our soul we all know our dreams make us who we are we got today so spin me round them show me the away back to burning up in my heart like a flame like a brighter shooting star in our souls we all know our dreams make us who we are amazing start $20,000 for the first challenge can you believe we spent one day in the kitchen and We’ve Come Away with $20,000 incredible it’s really quite weird to be waking up again in the Master Chef house it feels in some ways like it was only yesterday was here I did have a dream last night that I was on Master Chef and then I woke up when I was on Master Chef the other teams look pretty good they seem to work together well they do I think it’s different this time around because having watched every series of Master Chef as well as obviously you’ve been with these guys before I feel like I know everyone and and so there’s quite an easy report between us all [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] wow boom Master Chef allar we’ve kicked off haven’t we the crocken bush how’s the fingers little bit burnt the war wounds cuz you know what we were chatting and I just went blue team has got this in the bag they’ve done the challenge before they’re older they they’re they’re cling in on retirement these guys we kept tripping on our Z frames you know I’ll deal with J later [Music] well welcome back to the kitchen another day another charity dollar that’s right another charity dollar and how fantastic you guys have the power to raise money for something very special so what’s this challenge all about today you have to name your champion and name your Cuisine and it’s going to work like this today you’re going to cook head-to-head in 4 30 minutes Showdown rounds in each round you’ll have to nominate a team member to cook within each round $5,000 up for grabs that means every single one of you will be cooking today so the big question who and what yellow team yesterday you won $220,000 for your Charities but also you won not one but two advantages Kate as a as a team captain you get to pick which Cuisine all three competitors have to cook in the first round but before you do that Kate this is all about strategy who’s going to cook for your team in round one I am oh I don’t know I I immediately think you’re going to be cooking something dessert what’s your cuine not tell it’s good Julie Callum you’re now going to have to pick which of your team goes up against Kate but here’s the tricky bit you don’t know what Cuisine you’re cooking that’s what you call an advantage isn’t it I love it right Callum who you going to put up against Kate we decided that we want po to cook for [Laughter] us absolutely 100% jonno Callen why Jonah the very similar types of cooks I think Jonah will be Adept at whatever a cat chooses Jonathan it’s a good one Julie which of your four Valiant competitors is going to step into that Arena I’ll be going up against Kate and [Music] jonno why well first of all we had a shoe off yesterday and dessert queen beat me so I’ve got a little score to settle there um secondly I mean Jon I had a crack about my age so I need to teach the whipper snapper a lesson love it oh I love it I reckon the three of us would be a good competition fantastic chly take your place this round is going to be a pretty cool match up the two winners head-to-head so Kate what everybody needs to know is the strategy that you’re playing what’s the cuisine that everybody has to cook the cuisine that we are going to cook today in the first round is Lebanese oh Lebanese that’s real man a little bit where did that one come from well my husband actually has Lebanese Heritage and when I look across at you guys I go not Lebanese Heritage not Lebanese no no nobody Cooks Lebanese so but Jonathan loves Moroccan my dad’s Moroccan very close Julie you put your thumbs up there that was before I found to let out some things to think about you’re cooking for your team your pride your charity and getting them that $5,000 your 30 minutes starts so you forgot [Music] that’s who’s you pick who do you think is going to win it don’t underestimate Jonathan a father who’s Moroccan he eats it every day and you can make that segue into Lebanese [Music] food I wouldn’t be surprised if judie Goodman does not have an absolutely ripping Lebanese dish taught to by 11 his auntie somewhere you know what I’m thinking I think Kate’s got that one dish in her Armory she knows you can nail and I think that is a huge Advantage I’m doing a spice rub Lamb with a parsley salad and um some sweet potato crisps so it’s sort of a you know modern take I suppose on traditional [Music] Leones uh I’m not comfortable at the challenge at all actually I’m going to try and make I think they’re called K it’s like round bowls it’s like minced lamb and onions and everything and then coated in sort of a chick pea and then uh and then deep fried I have no idea what the recipe is I have no idea what’s in it I’m going to make it up as I go when I think of Lebanese food it’s all shared food it’s in the middle of the table so I go straight for the old favorites of the cofa the tabuli you know the tahini yogurt and some flatbread what have you put in there suc or see and some C that’s me and then what else are you going to do that with you I’m going to do a little cheeks to bully what of cheeks to the couscous instead of the cracked wheat okay that’s all right that’s fine I want to know where all the sesame seeds for though that’s that’s I’m going to make like a tahini yogurt TOA with [Applause] it well first round 15 minutes down 15 minutes to go question is are you setting your team up for success Jonathan Gary what’s happening what’s happening what’s happening possibly the worst challenge I could be in I reckon why do you reckon you know what because I’m sort of trying to make you know lamb K like got my lamb chops you got de fry them like little frits yeah yeah that’s right okay are you going to coat them in anything them yeah in what well I think it’s either I think it’s a sort of a combination of the chickpeas and B of wheat sort of thing and then it gets fried you’ve never made it before I love it [Music] have you cooked this dish before I’ve cooked versions of it yeah right cuz you’re one up on Jonathan already cuz he’s cooking something he’s never cooked before so tell us what it is so you got little lambets I’ve got little l a spice what’s what spice did you put on there fenel coriander um a little bit of garlic olive oil salt I like it really simple you pick lamb fets too which will cook quickly and that’s right they’re getting there and what are you serving it with I’m going to do it with CA chips a little p lemon Red Onion some pine nuts nice bit of a dressing maybe some pistachios okay and then if I got time I’ll do some other [Music] bits come j you got to get something on the plate I’m actually really regretting this dish that I’ve picked everything has going wrong my station looks a mess there’s rubbish everywhere the Ki is not looking anything like I’d imagined and then frying it I’m not really sure what went wrong when Jonathan’s on his game he is the most devastating cook in the competition but when he fails he fails epically oh my God Aaron and Marion what’s going on down here I we we started off confident we get a little scared but jono always pulls it together at the last moment he does we have confidence ladies and gentlemen one minute to go one minute come [Music] on this is just so exciting you’ve just got 30 seconds left come on TR another 30 seconds [Music] [Music] buddy on this is it 10 seconds no 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 [Applause] 1 I just don’t know why I put myself in these positions the kibit looks disgusting I was just really worried about taking my dish up to the judges I wouldn’t serve this to anyone [Music] Kate you set the challenge so we’ll taste your dish [Laughter] first tell us what it is this is a spiced lamb fillet with parsley salad preserved lemon yogurt and cummer chips [Music] I think the combination of flavors I think the idea that you came up with right at the start is really good and I think it’s a really neat clean presentation lemon parsley pine nuts onion you get all of that nice cleansing yogurt cucumber Dill get all those flavors you’ve cooked the lamb really well there’s a touch of pink I would like more of the spices but I I think that’s great I think you played your strategy perfectly thank you hey yes well F son Jonathan I’ll P taking my dish up to the judges I’m really disappointed with myself [Music] Jonathan yeah I’m sure it comes down to taste doesn’t it off you go well it might come to taste but you guys always taught me when I was on this in the kitchen Master Chef is about taking it to the next level yeah and I’ve taken Lebanese to the next level down it’s the wrong way [Music] [Music] actually crusting that mince with the chickpeas is a lovely texture but in saying that it’s just like fried risle in ways um the yogurt cucumber sauce is okay it just needs more flavor a that’s a new maneuver please go back to the house tonight and find a recipe and make one cuz when they’re done properly they’re delicious Julie it’s your [Applause] [Music] turn what did you cook uh it’s a beef Kofa with h tahini yogurt a little what I call cheats Tuli and some flatbread it was amazing watching you cook amazing to see all those different elements um coming together on the plate oh thank you and this look looks wonderful and it’s a great example of how much you can do when you’re well planned in a very short period of time thank [Music] you great generous looking dish fantastic Lebanese flavors um wonderful combination of elements and notice there’s a fair bit of difference between the breads so the bread Gary and George had were delicious and really light and crispy and Flaky and that last bit of bread is still a bit doughy so that’s a negative but otherwise just like Kate an awful lot of positives well done thank you grab your tree trunk back in line can we taste to fascinating our first head-to-head round and we saw some fantastic the mar k at the same time I’m excited wonder what Po’s making cooking against Maran and Danny is extremely intimidating I’m the only of the three that is Chinese so I’m really feeling like I have to perform po yes you look nervous I am I mean I’m against know Danny and Maran who like are quite into their Asian food what’s your dish um I’m going to do a dumpling dough like a gougi and then I’m going to stuff it with this um pork beef fenel um Shing rice wine um soy nice and then I’m going to pan fry them okay do you want me to leave you alone I would love it if you left me alone [Music] okay I think it’s just really overwhelming being back here in the kitchen and cooking competitively again I’m incredibly nervous more nervous than ever was on my season of Master Chef Maran hi George what’s your dish um my version of salt and pepper prawns y with a um cucumber and sesame uh soy salad y it’s a simple dish that can be done really badly uh so I’m hoping to do a good one [Music] today I don’t know if I can take on PO and Maran they were my Idols when I was watching season 1 and two I can’t believe this is happening hey Denny hi George what’s your dish I’m making um L Chi toffee pups okay what’s that so it’s um a l CH Fritter and then I’m going to roll it in toffee and make it into like a little lollipop with some and Spike the caramel with some flavors um cuz you know there’s lots of Fritter lots of toffee in Chinese dessert so I think this is kind of fun dessert for kids [Music] 15 down 15 to go Chinese is the theme who will become the cooking [Music] [Music] Queen usually The Dumpling Skins are much um smaller and thinner but because I was just um racing I had to just commit to whatever I’d cut I’m really worried now whether they’re going to cook all the way [Music] through so Callum Chinese the C you’d pick Marin without knowing what the guine was good call do you think I think so I think this is her kind of Cuisine she’s got a very clear idea in her head of what she wants to cook salt and pepper scampy Chinese dish automtic do you think it is I think it is I think the like simple flavors with a really fresh beautiful product should work really well this is the quietest I’ve ever heard the MF kitchen are you nervous 10 minutes to go come on guys this dish really is a gamble I don’t know if it’s going to work because I’ve never made it before for last year in season 3 the dish that I was eliminated was a banana Fritter doesn’t look that appealing does it I want to show the judges that I can cook a crispy golden batter are you feel pretty good about about Denise your choice I mean she loves cooking Chinese flavors she loves cooking outside the box and that’s what excites me when I watch her cook [Applause] it needs to be on the plate when I stand here just gazing to the middle distance I think people are thinking that I’m trying to identify flavors fleeting moments of chili or spring onion sometimes that’s the case sometimes I’m looking forward and seeing two of the Stars I think inspired you to send in your application what that feel like it’s true a that’s so nice Danny it is a really big moment for me um it all comes down three Mighty Warriors are going to cook we’ve done a bit of strategizing and we think that Kumar’s strength in this context is probably in the Indian big surprise sorry I am a bit shocked at the moment I was coming down here thinking it was something else what it’s the battle of the BLS Chris Aaron Kumar you have to cook us a delicious Indian dish you have 30 minutes to do it in are you ready yes yes oh yeah good okay let’s go let’s go come on on guys go har go har I’m going to put something out there you y put it out there Kuma’s got this one in the bag you reckon yeah no I don’t reckon you know it’s interesting because it’s a long time since Chris has been in this kitchen and he’s been out running his restaurant doing lots of different things cand he understands spicing he understands flavoring he understands technique that makes him very hard to beat don’t let us forget Aaron he loves Mexican food so those spices those flavors you know it’s not not not a million bumped Marion out of the competition on a Sant sauce and that was a good understanding of spices and flavors the yellow team shows an Indian Kumar’s the expert I’m going to do the best I can but you know I’m seriously out of my depth here I got to invent something I’m going to do an Indian spice rub piece of um salmon a little uh cucumber and riter and if I get time I’m going to do some cauliflower I got to get fish cooked absolutely perfectly and just the flavor balance get all the spices [Music] right CA you spent a few minutes in the pantry I couldn’t find the curry ingredients what Curry you going to make cuz you’re setting s it’s a South Indian thing it’s um musles in a coconuty cry sauce oh lovely so what have you got in there a lot of fenel seed in there and Fen gra and coriander and black mustard seed I was going to do a roti uh but I want to do it with a typical South Indian accompaniment it’s called UPA and it’s like an Indian cuscus lovely UPA UPA [Music] Aaron hey Gary thinking Italian food Mexican food I was thinking all those things believe me you’re obviously doing some sort of little porn curry with a paraa is that right absolutely what are going to be the predominant flavors in you oh turmeric a little bit of spice with some chili some ginger um some cinnamon you know I’m just kind of pulling flavors together and hoping that it matches with something last time you did that P flavors together I think you’re not marrying out of the competition yeah well you know we can only hope that uh I do well today today in the kitchen I’m just trying to take deep breaths the first challenge I I just totally lost the plot I feel quite nervous you know I’ve got the shakes a little bit I’ve never made this dish before I’m actually making it up on the spot I just hope it tastes good The Secret of doing this dish is to get a really good flavored curry sauce going through and then steaming the muscles in the curry sauce I suddenly realize how lovely it is to be back here doing what you really like to do and producing good food it just is a wonderful feeling Kuma do you know that the beads from the muscles are all off yep I did cool shut up now lots of wonderful spices and aromatics let’s hope all these dishes come together 10 minutes to go what you doing I’m completely uncomfortable cooking today I’ve screwed up salmon on Master Chef before it’s raw there’s no doubt about it all the other bits and pieces I’m I’m okay with but that salmon that will crucify me if I cook this wrong comea make sure there’s no beards just double check Final little finishes right well that’s the third round done and dusted one thing left to do it’s to taste your food but remember theme was Indian I wonder how you’ve done Kuma have you come oh thank you I couldn’t have taken it any longer brilliant stuff what have you cooked um it’s South Indian inspired food and it’s muscles in a coconut curry sauce accompanied by a dish called auma which is a semolina sort of dumpling I guess you can call it I tell you what youve cook these muscles brilliantly well in terms of cooking cuz they are super Plum look [Music] beautiful oh few beards on [Music] [Music] them I’ll tell you what you’ve cooked these muscles brilliantly well in terms of cooking cuz they are super plump look beautiful few beards on them [Music] though delicious muscle delicious they’re really beautifully cooked what I love about the sauce is it’s wonderfully aromatic so there’s Ginger there’s turmeric there’s fennel seed there’s coriander you can pick call those notes out and I like that combination between the fresh aromatics and the dry spices I think it’s wonderful you’ve missed a few beards on the muscles which really in the Master Chef cun is not quite good enough but you know what I just pluck that out and demolish that whole Bowl it’s really [Music] delicious Aaron [Music] what’s the dish okay it’s uh prawns with uh just a turmeric uh cinnamon uh and coconut sauce uh and some Paratha with some praw oil [Music] the bread really pulls this dish together um there’s a lot of turmeric there and if you just have the turmeric and the prawn it’s really intense but that bread and the season you put on there just pulls it back that’s a beautiful dish with lots of different flavors beautifully cooked Chris your turn [Music] what’s a dish I made a bit of an Indian spice rub um on salmon with a little riter little cucumber salad and some cauliflower beignet one of a better description this still makes me so godamn nervous [Music] cooked beautifully man cooked beautifully I was dreading that last time I cooked bloody salmon on this show it was a [Music] disaster what I love most about the this dish is the way you’ve cooked that salmon perfectly that’s probably one of the most perfectly cooked salmon I’ve seen here in this kitchen in how many years um beautiful Cris beet and just simple cucumber dressed what more could we asked for Chris what a great bit of cooking thank you [Music] [Applause] [Music] today in this round round three there could only be one winner it’s a unanimous decision and that winner is Chris for The Blue Team well done Chris you have won $5,000 for the lsmith animal hospital that’s fantastic news but also you have won the advantage of the blue team going to the fourth and final round we know who’s going to cook in round four Callum tast probably the most in the last three years has been Justin some of the she cooked in series one were quite amazing you got some Jazzy yeah got some she has a brilliant way of flavors but look at who else she’s got to compete against Callum you know since he’s left this competition he’s worked with Philip Michelle at pm24 one of your restaurants and then you’ve got Hayden who went through and one the immunity pin based on a French dish this is going to be Stella Justin hi George how are you I’m good how are you what are you going to cook I’m going to do a zucchini and very finely chopped prawn sauce with a bit of champagne cream of course a little bit of butter so just sauté that off and just put that on a nice piece of Snapper just that’s nicely pan fried and I’ll do a little white bean pure underneath it so nice simple flavors nice Callum and Hayden can you beat them I would love to win win this but um we just say I don’t even know what they’re cooking I can’t bone this Quail I’m freaking out take a deep breath Cal right Callum what’s the dish uh going to get some Quail on yeah I’m going to cook the legs and then the uh the breast on the crown as well um going to do a little butter sauce um some mushrooms sauted off as well and finish it with a little bit of fresh fenel and uh Mandarin actually I thought there are in season at the moment I thought I might give him a go fantastic sounds delicious you happy to be back here I I am in a freaking out kind of [Music] way W the flo looks good too wow it definitely smells French down here Hayden Jud how are you mate you’re good mate I love the smell of perno it’s so typically French you know uh what’s the dish a nice little pan fried piece of Snapper with uh some bra fennel in that perno that you just smelt and also just a classic bbon sauce so wow French Classics nice and simple Justine’s cooking Snapper your cooking Snapper why is your Snapper going to be perfect it’s just about getting your timing right and getting the heat and temperature and that’s all cooking is really oh come on cow [Music] $5,000 for your charity and only 15 minutes to go come on yeah to get this right I need to get the sauce tasting superb um you know classic flavors echel lot uh we got lemon zucchini and the sweetness of the prawns I don’t want to overcook the prawns that’s number one getting the sauce right cooking the fish to Perfection really hard to do um especially for these judges they are stress me oh they look good Cal they do they look fantastic Callum sounds like he’s doing a good job how you going Cal yeah not too bad mate how are you yeah all right it’s so romantic in the kitchen the sun’s setting and you’ve only got 5 minutes to go come on hiding J Hayden has been cooking so cool calm and collected the whole time but in the last 5 minutes it’s looking like it might slip through his fingers he really needs to get that Fong finished yeah if I don’t get it all coming together it’s going to be um one split runny mess what’s wrong Justine I think it needs a little bit more with the fish I’m looking for Golden on that skin side and of course making sure that it is just cooked in the middle I don’t want it to be overcooked stick a knife in oh it’s just just if I can’t cook that fish to Perfection the judges will slam me is a little bit more [Music] I’ll tell you one thing for sure the Reds [Music] let Justin Callum Hayden round form what a beauty that was you had to cook a French inspired dish Justine you’re first just say what’s the dish so I’ve just done a simple pan fried Snapper with a white bean puree and a champagne and prawn sauce I hope the the fish is cooked I’m always petrified of overcooking the fish the snap has cooked [Music] [Applause] [Music] perfectly I love it uh I love that sauce it’s when you say creamy sauces I always go ooh not one of those sort of old heavy gluggy sauces but it’s not that um lovely little pops of prawn through it zucchini and creamy white bean what I don’t like is why would you crispy something up like Snapper skin and then tip you know a chunky sauce over the top and make it soggy true doesn’t really make sense um but that’s the only criticism Justine don’t be nervous you’re an Allstar thank you thank [Music] you gum I’ll be come oh he does look he does that same nervous little walk up the stter stle looks great looks clean looks fresh quiet’s French fennels French white bean puree is French let’s dig in shall we are you worried about anything um honestly you know you were just saying how it looked that was uh after many of your master classes watching you kind of like think about how plate of food goes together I know it just sounds like I’m sucking up but you guys have seen what Gary food looks like going kind of like you know how he like takes time ingi tell how good his food is see you’re goodl looking [Music] Gary I love the Quil I think you’ve cooked the Quil perfectly the breast is pink the Skin’s crispy beautiful amount of seasoning love the mushrooms cuz you’ve got caramelization there’s this little chariness to the whole thing and then you sweep it all up with a bit of that olive oil and the white bean puree which is nice and creamy and we all love those crispy creamy textures and then you get a little smack of Mandarin you think o not sure about that just my opinion though okay thanks y woo time for the final dish yellow team’s [Music] Hayden Hayden is this dish as good as the one that won imunity in 2011 no I don’t think it is umt I one of the elements is just not right on that plate what went wrong uh I basically I used the wrong vinegar for my bonc sauce and it just really really [Music] [Music] sweet um this is definitely not a bur Blanc however when you eat that beautiful cook Snapper with some of that very simply cooked fennel the sweetness accentuates this the an his flavor of the fennel and it’s a bit like the you get that flavor that the fennel maybe has been caramelized you know it’s been cooked with a little bit of sugar in the oven to get that kind of that chewy toffee flavor but I think it’s probably in terms of this challenge a little bit too much of a sticky toffee Snapper than [Music] fourth and Final Round And you three gave us a problem you gave us three dishes that we loved for different reasons so we asked ourselves as we always do in those situations where it’s kind of too close to call which of those dishes we’d like to eat tomorrow night for dinner so the winner of this French round by the narrowest of margins is [Music] Callum Callum that’s five grand for the cancer Council and that’s a win for the red team you’re first so far well done well brilliant to have you back and Brilliant that you’re all cooking so well and we know that you love the master chef kitchen so much so just because of that we’re going to bump you outside and take it off site tomorrow and that’s going to be a thrill but can I tell you out of the frying pan
