hey everybody welcome back to the Old sweds Farm want to give you a garden review it’s been probably 3 weeks it’s been a long time lot’s been going on I’ve got a full-time job that’s getting in the way of gardening it’s getting in the way of filming video so uh it’s a lot of fun good challenge for me I’m running a couple of businesses for a company and it’s a lot of work it’s a lot of fun um let let me show you what we got going here and some of the the the positives some of the negatives and just where we’re at like I said it’s probably 3 weeks after the last video uh mid June here uh Zone 4B so first let me show you the pumpkin patch nothing nothing I am just battling weeds absolutely battling weeds uh I was hoping to get a bunch of stuff in this week or this weekend uh father Day weekend it’s supposed to rain most of the weekend it’s just the stuff is just taken over let me show you I mean this is the little slot where we’ve put in uh zucchini and yellow squash before it’s just nuts I I I don’t know it’s a challenge uh we’ll get through it uh I’m looking at other other scenarios here um all right our tubs here at the end first one carrots now they’ve grown quite a bit since the last time but as you notice there’s some stuff missing I don’t if you can see something’s been chewing on there and I can’t find the caterpillars or is it mice climbing up here I don’t know but we’ve got carrots so carrots are are growing we’re getting going not bad onions onions are doing really well in this tub I think these are the yellow onions and these are the white onions I believe I got my not’s inside sorry I’ve got broccoli and cauliflower growing down there got our green peppers our uh orange and red peppers I’ve got some space here and then starting with with this row uh pablanos I could not get a pablano to grow at all from seed I tried three times so I ended up buying uh a four pack and I got five of them so I got five Panos I got some uh uh what are those yellow uh wax peppers my Habaneros they’ll come but boy they’re they’re struggling right now and I’ll explain why in a bit and then my uh jalapenos and they’re they’re starting to make a move they were getting getting going now this whole area of the garden this is the low spot my yard comes down and drains down into this area this whole area last weekend um into early this week we got about 4 Ines of rain so uh we had standing water down here it was really it came down quick so we had some standing water down here um the peppers and everything I’m not sure they really like being submerged like that uh their base underwater for a while it was probably about a day so we’ll see I think that’s kind of hindered them a little bit we’re supposed to get another possibly this weekend 1 to 2 in of rain I’m hoping it goes around me just give me an inch and then leave me alone for the rest of the week let me show you what we got here our potatoes potatoes in the tubs are just doing incredible um got our three three types of potatoes and they are really growing I might throw a little more uh uh soil manure in with that and then our this is our mixture our leftover potatoes everything else we had down in the basement hanging down there now this area I just there’s still lots of weeds but I uh got the weed whip out and weed whipped it right down to the ground I burned chunks of it and you can see that after 3 days this grass is tough this is tough I am considering leveling this off and putting down uh fabric on the whole thing and just be done with that or leave some big holes in it big openings where I can make Mounds for things or bringing in more more tubs I’m just tired of battling the weeds um as you can see the weeds all along the backside here I need to get some more fabric down um we got peas here and beans there so we’re trying to work the work the weeds I’ve still got uh TST laying on here just in case we get a big windy day but the peas and beans are in the ground they’re sprouted they’re coming up we’re doing good I’ve got in this raised bed some more onions I believe these are the Reds the red onions and then I’ve got one that I can plant and I’ve got down here this one is another one that I can plant and here is our herb garden in with a big weed hanging over the edge but uh Dill on the end oh what if I got mint Holly loves mint I don’t know what she makes with mint but she makes mint uh oregano Thyme and basil so a lot of stuff and then down here tomato alley Weeds on one side we got some cukes that are planted again this was submerged um so didn’t do great now the tomatoes um and the tomatoes have just rocketed here in the last uh week I just got to go and all these little blooms take the blooms off cuz I don’t want any fruit right now I want to get it at least four 4 to 5 ft tall then let it uh really go to town but it the past week it’s really taken off now I’ve got this whole area here what I’m thinking of doing is just burning some more holes and uh putting the zucchini and yellow squash in those holes they don’t need to put out uh Vines and uh put Roots down with each uh plant so that would work on this I’m also thinking of watermelon and uh cantaloupe some fruit and maybe even starting those in here uh and let them grow out onto the plastic uh again they don’t need a root down with every uh uh every leaf you know how a pumpkin is where it uh you every leaf that a pumpkin has it puts a root down below it um since some of that the watermelon and such Doesn’t do that it would do just fine here on the plastic so that’s what I’m thinking if I could plastic this whole thing or put that Garden fabric down I could then put all our fruit every year here cantaloupe watermelon musk melon uh uh everything that we we love uh summer fruit wise can grow right here and some of the things that don’t put down a root uh acorn squash some of that stuff uh and then down in the far end I guess down there I could battle the weeds and uh that’s where the keep going there with the pumpkins and uh little mini pumpkins the squash uh wallam the butternuts uh some of that stuff that needs that wants to put a root down at every uh every leaf you know gardening it’s always a struggle there it’s never an easy season last year there was not enough rain or last two years not enough rain this year more than we can handle we I think we’ve gotten more rain this spring than we did all last year it’s just amazing uh year after year how different it is um and we’ve got room for more you know obviously all the holes that we haven’t filled we are gardening for us this year we’re doing just gardening for us we’re not running a CSA we’re not doing any I mean we’ll share uh when we’ve got extra but we are not doing anything on a grand scale like we have in the past so uh totally different feel to it a lot less to water still got some weeding but uh I will be putting out a video talking about kind of what we’re what we’re looking to do um and how we’re trying to accomplish that but just going after how do we produce our fruits and vegetables for a year so I’ll get a video up for that anyways Garden tour number two progress but still a lot to do um hopefully this will be growing tall uh in two weeks by the time you see it cuz two weeks will be we’ll be right about at the 4th of July so um and I’m not too worried about putting in still putting in pumpkins and squash and stuff we’ve still got July August September we got 3 months left we should be able to get quite a bit of stuff going and Twilight the light lasts forever the Sun’s Up 5:00 a.m. and it doesn’t set till after 9:00 now so uh and Twilight last night Twilight went till almost 10:30 I was out here I pulled the last weed uh after 10:00 so unreal all right thanks for watching uh put some comments down on how your Garden’s doing and we’ll give the next update in a couple of weeks see you later everybody thanks

  1. I rent in Minneapolis, so my veggie garden ins in fabric garden bags. Seems like everything is very happy tomato plants are about 4' tall and flowering. Pepper plant is already popping out peppers. Watermelon and cantaloupe or slowly starting to spread as well. That being said, non of my seed starts survived so these are all try number 2 from farmers market starts.

  2. My garden is a lot smaller and mostly in raised beds and Greenstalks. I am starting a fruit guilds/food forest but that’s going slow. I need to plant my squash, melons and sweet potato slips. Do you think there is still time to start the squash and melon from seeds or is it better to buy plants now. I’m in White Bear Lake.

  3. Last night i noticed that the second planting of cucumbers were submerged. 4 inches since Saturday night. I'm reluctant to grumble after all of the dry years.
I've been pulling purslane whenever it's dry enough.
    Thanks for the update.

  4. The rain has been something else this year. So we have lots of garden pests and weeds. But, I still think we will be able to get a great harvest. Your garden is beautiful ❤❤❤ Hopefully your peppers take off.

  5. Congratulations on your job! Woven weed fabric is a good idea especially with being so limited in time. Hope the garden doesn’t get you down because it’s not like last years. It just takes a different perspective. Happy Gardening!

  6. Hi Rich!
I have a massive weed problem between my fabric rows and in my burn holes in my fabric and what I did this last winter to help me get a head start in spring was covered the open rows with tarps right before the snow covered everything. Held them down with varous things, rocks, pavers, staples…. Come spring, I pulled back the tarps and had nice clean fresh soil to go straight to amending and planting in and skipped the weeding. I took bits and peices of scrap garden fabric and put them in the burn holes and just used a garden staple in the middle to keep it in place. Worked so well! We have the same invasive runner grass like you and it seems impossible to get rid of.

  7. Nice tour! You will get a lot of food and isn’t that the purpose!! Im in 6a and plant mostly in raised beds… a lot easier and more control but not as much volume.. we have 6 tall beds (36”); 5 (18” rectangular); and 2 (18” round) plus 7 Green stalk towers and a few grow bags… if we can grow enough for me to can or freeze dry- it will be worth it💕 keep growing- it doesn’t have to be very pretty… just productive💕

  8. Your raised beds are killing it this year! We are in the middle of a glorious rain right now. Our entire livelihood was at risk if it didn’t rain.
Maybe you need to grow rice this year? 😉
Your garden is set up so nicely Rich. Glad to hear the new job is going well. It is so hard to work and have a garden too. So many nights we are out there until dark.
    Take care. 🌺

  9. One thing I have difficulty growing are any melons watermelon cantaloupe I’ve tried for about three years and I’ve given up when I grow them. They’re the size of a baseball.

  10. It seems like it's feast or famine with the rain, doesn't it, Rich? We have a lot of standing water down here, too. The corn and bean fields are now lakes. Steve is in charge of the garden this year, and it's doing well. We are traveling more and more now so we won't even have a garden next year. Give Holly a hug for me!

  11. Congrats on your job! It’s so hard balancing everything. The weather is all over the place. Been so cold and dry here with potential frost tonight. Everything looks amazing by you. The heat and humidity is so beneficial. We have been so cold this week. Only had one day so far at 81. Otherwise been 50’s and 60’s for the highs. Zucchini and yellow squash would do fine with holes through the weed cloth. They don’t need mounds. We stopped using mounds a few years ago and they grow well
