Used to love Breyers growing up (particularly their strawberry); haven’t had any in a while. Saw a post recommending their seasonal Star Spangled Scoops flavor. As well as recommendations for their mint as a strong mint with natural coloring. I’ve been on a bit of a mint ice cream journey (linked below) so thought I’d circle back to this particular flavor my family used to love.
Good sale at Giant Eagle 2/$7 and $3 off 2 coupon = $4. Retail $4.99 each for 48 oz.
Breyers Star Spangled Scoops
- Description: Strawberry, vanilla, blueberry flavor with other natural flavors.
- Technical details: “Frozen dairy desert.” 130 calories and 81 grams per 2/3 cup.
- Strawberry: has a bit of natural strawberry taste but not a strong one. Is a little bland for strawberry, which can be a powerful and fragrant flavor.
- Vanilla: a pleasant, neutral vanilla. No complaints.
- Blueberry: probably the most intense flavor of the three. A bit odd: like the flavor of a blueberry yogurt candy shell or Wild Berry Pop Tart icing (not the jam). Not a flavor I’ve encountered in ice cream before. The reason I was interested in the ice cream. Not terrible but definitely not a natural tasting blueberry, or even a natural tasting blueberry yogurt. Yoplait blueberry, not Chobani.
- Texture: pretty gummy. Reminds me of Cool Whip. Springy.
- Overall: passable flavors that blend decently well together. More artificial tasting than I would have liked. The texture is odd: pushing the boundaries even for frozen dairy dessert. Perhaps also due to low sugar content.
- Rating: 5.5/10. Kids might like this one.
Breyers Mint Chocolate Chip
- Description: Cool mint ice cream with rich chocolatey chips.
- Technical details: “Ice cream.” 200 calories and 90 grams per 2/3 cup.
- Cool mint ice cream: mildly minty, less strong than I remember. Not a strong mint, but has a pleasant, refreshing tingle. Does not cool the mouth as much as Turkey Hill Choco Mint Chip. Kind of between a sweet cream ice cream and mint. Tastes natural.
- Chocolatey chips: semisweet chocolate. Plentiful mix ins. Thick and crunchy with good chocolate taste.
- Texture: standard ice cream, similar to Turkey Hill, Perry’s, etc. Nice.
- Overall: Pleasantly surprised to still find a Breyers ice cream similar to the past. I wish the mint was stronger, but I think this would be a great ice cream for someone looking for a somewhat minty, natural, chocolate chip ice cream. If you like Haagen Dazs level of sweetness this is probably for you.
- Rating: 7.5/10. A nice, simple ice cream with satisfying crunch.
Other recommendations:
- Turkey Hill – Choco Mint Chip. Mintier ice cream with plentiful semi-sweet chocolate flakes.
- Perry’s – Mint-Ting-A-Ling. Very similar minty ice cream to Turkey Hill, slightly more milk fat. Extremely crunchy Swiss Chips (a bit hard; not for weak teeth).
- Kroger Private Selection – Maine Blueberry Belgian Waffle Cone. Tasty blueberry compote with natural, sweetened blueberry flavor. Maple syrup flavor base.

I grew up with Breyers mint chocolate chip and still love it! It’s tasty and it reminds me of my childhood.
It’s funny I was just telling my brother I wanted to try a good blueberry ice cream. That had to be good! With the strawberry too?
It’s funny to me that the “patriotic” ice cream is just the French flag
Mint chocolate chip is my favorite ice cream flavor
*next week ill be reviewing some crazy new cracker called saltines!*
I may have to revisit Breyers for mint chocolate chip. Hey, all us mint ice cream fans! Love you all!! I recently had Ben n Jerry’s Mint Chocolate Cookie which I’ll get again. Also had the Turkey Hill Mint Choco Mint Chip. The chocolate chip, in my opinion, was perfect. Dark chocolate shavings that melt in the mouth but for some reason the mint ice cream was off.
