Been curious; what kind of pepper is used to make your traditional Crushed Red Pepper, and what is the best alternative for something that is actually HOT? I love superhots and would be nice to have a crushed pepper on the scorpion/reaper/X level.

If you want better red pepper flakes get Flat Iron Pepper Company. They are worth the money.
I have seen cayenne pepper and I have also seen ghost pepper.
If you shop at [My Spice Sage,](https://www.myspicesage.com/) or [Flatiron Pepper Co.](https://www.flatironpepper.com/collections/front-page) you can have your choice of very fresh and also VERY hot crushed and ground chilies.
Buy some dried pepper pods. Toss them in a coffee grinder you don’t mind having to clean real good. Grind a little. There you go, pepper flakes of whatever kind and/or blend of peppers you want. I haven’t even used super hots, just dried ancho, arbol, guajillo, habanero peppers from the Mexican aisle of the grocery store. You get vastly better flakes to use for very little money
I made crushed red out of dried Thai Bird chili from my garden. So good, and extremely hot.
