
The difference is crystal clear. Actually smoked is significantly better than “natural smoke flavor” as an ingredient. These are FAR superior to the Bela with smoke flavor that I tried a couple months ago, for a relative price! It actually tastes like smoked fish. My biggest gripe with the Bela with piri piri and smoke flavor can was the lack of spice (but that’s not their fault, it’s mine). The second gripe was the fact that they are not actually smoked.

I’ve never tried smoked sardines before, but since I like the smoked flavor, I’m really curious now to try them.
I’m not disagreeing with you, but smoked flavor is healthier than smoked. Smoking introduces carcinogens into your meat such as tars and PAHs. Those are filtered out in the manufacture of liquid smoke, leaving a guilt-free flavor product.
I think the main issue with smoke flavor/”liquid smoke” is just that they usually use too much.
