Have you ever tried some? Did you like it? Mods, if you don't think this is interesting enough despite not strictly being about onions, please feel free to remove.

There’s wildly different varieties. There’s two parts to it. 1) People are drama queens and 2) it’s hard to describe the taste without comparing it to stuff that’s gross.

Onion ice cream is a factor. But it’s more like it’s so strong it makes people think of onions. In some tropical fruits like guava or passionfruit… there is this note sometimes that is very faint cat pee… that is also going on but stronger.

Evidently the ones available in the US are not the best, just like mangoes and pineapples etc but it’s still worth giving it a try but I imagine there are ones that are better than what I had. It is shocking and an acquired taste but it’s not popular for no reason. It was less challenging and I enjoyed it a lot more than a lot of cheeses I have tried. It’s worth trying if you have a group that all wants to since It’s large and expensive.

It tastes like bananas and onions blended together. Fuck that combo lol. If you want a tasty exotic fruit, eat jackfruit, it even looks similar to durian

I love Durian. It’s high in Volatile Sulfur Compounds, especially thiols (ethanethiol and propanethiol) and disulfides (diethyl disulfide and ethyl isopropyl disulfide). This is what gives the onion-like taste and aroma.

There are more than 200 different varieties of tropical durian. Durians developed their intense smell as a way to advertise the presence of ripe fruits and attract animals that occur at very low densities in the rainforests.
In a ripe fruit, the expression of one key sulfur-related gene was more than 2,000 times higher than in other parts of the plant.

  4. I’ve had durian in Singapore. I wanted to like it. I tried so hard to like it.

I think it’s fucking vile. It tastes like a rancid rockmelon tinged with liver. And the deproteinising tablets I used for my contact lenses back in the 1980s.

I’ve wondered if it’s like the coriander/cilantro thing where some people simply lack the tastebuds to appreciate how revolting it is (fortunately I love coriander).

It tastes nothing like onions and every onion out there should now be in a class lawsuit against this wicked libel!

Interesting. Onion custard sounds delicious. One of my favorite things to bake is an apple onion tart, so I’m on board.
