it is Thursday so that means we are back in liava kitchen and Lynn is a nutrition educator with the University of Maryland extension and if you’re looking for a healthy option to dip your favorite snack in then Lynn has the recipe for you let’s check out how to make Greek yogurt onion dip this time of year we have lots of celebrations happening between Memorial Day and graduations and Mother’s Day and Father’s Day and all sorts of things in between lots of spring birthdays so I’m going to show you today a healthy uh snack or or dish that you can bring to the potluck uh so we’re going to make a healthy version which is also a a much more flavorful version of a kind of a french onion or an onion dip so what I’ve done is I’ve taken an entire onion and I’ve chopped it up into uh I’ve diced it and then I’ve put it in a pan and I put a little oil in the pan put the onions in the pan and I cooked it low and slow for probably about 15 minutes or more um just a really long time and just keep stirring it until you get um occasionally stirring it you can kind of leave it alone with a lid on if it’s in a really low heat and then just stir it every so often and eventually you end up with this very Brown caramelized onions and these have been allowed to cool that’s why I’ve Got My Pan sitting on The Cutting Board here and I’m touching it with my bare hands and from an entire large onion I’ve gotten about I’d say 2/3 of a cup of onions out of this pan and so what we’re going to do is to that we are we are going to uh add to uh a little over a cup of Greek or strained yogurt and you can use lowfat you can use fat free and what’s great about this is that you can pretty much eat as much of this dip as you want to dip in your veggies because uh it’s a lot less calorie dense than having um say for example sour cream so I’m just going to add them to it [Music] and then my uh my favorite uh whisk in the kitchen often tends to be a fork don’t always need fancy equipment and I’m just stirring that together um to this you could add additional seasonings you could you could simply eat it like this and it’s going to be very flavorful um you could add a little bit of salt and pepper you could add your favorite uh low salt seasoning um some herbs to it whatever you’d like um but if you’re trying to keep this low salt you could certainly just add some sort of low salt seasoning blend I’m actually going to add just a little bit of a concentrated um it’s kind of like a bullion that I mixed with a little bit of water just to thin it out and I’m only adding maybe about a teaspoon of that and this makes it just like a an onion dip that you would uh get from the store in those powdered MI mixes but because the onions are cooked fresh this is so much more flavorful and we did it all with lowfat yogurt and then this is the fun part uh you can get your veggies out and just start chopping whatever kind you want um I think we’ve gotten in a habit where we use carrots and celery as our go-to vegetables on a platter but there’s so many interesting and beautiful things out there I’ve got some radishes from our farm market some fresh local asparagus some carrots and then I just put some uh some lettuce down on the plate to decorate with it or some greens um and then I’m just going to put our homemade dip into the Bowl here easy peasy nothing to it and there we have a very fresh flavorful low fat high protein cuz Greek yogurt has high protein uh yogurt dip that we can bring to the party or put out for guests so this is a simple easy one that’s sure to please I hope you try it and like it and if you do let us know what you think now as a reminder we do have all of nutrition educator limit’s tips and tricks on our website to find them to slog on to wmdt.com and click on the good morning do Marva page
