I have loved using my pellet grill for the last couple of years but lately everytime I start it up it's just an uncontrollably fire. Has anybody had this issue? I have a Louisiana Grills SL700 from Costco that I got as a gift in 2021. I clean it literally every other cook.

Looks like you need to close that sear plate ?

Have you tried firing it up without the heat shield to watch what happens?

  4. It’s filthy. You need to clean it and then it’ll burn without secondary flames.

Get a small shop vac to clean out the ashes. Some pellets leave more ash than others. I think lumberjack pellets burn clean and don’t leave as much ash as ither brands

Just used the grill again tonight to grill some burgers and corn on the cob. It was clean before I started the grill up and I only filled the hopper with enough for the cook. I had the same issue. Fire was crazy so I had to set temp at like 350. It calmed down after a while but that’s because it had ran out of pellets. I left the sear plate open and added more pellets to the hopper. Seems like the auger just kept running and was dumping way too many pellets in the burn pot.

I’ve read in your comments, that you clean it. Please post a picture of it after you clean it so we can see what the issue could be.

You need to clean (meaning scrape) the grease tray, and vacuum out the bottom of the grill to get rid of all the ash.

Clean the thermostat. I bet it’s overfeeding pellets because it can’t read the temp.

What brand of pellets are you using? I’ve heard some are much worse than others.

It looks dirty as sin, but you keep telling everyone you clean it. I would try a different pellet, the pellets you use may cause too much ash.

I used to own a hardware store and when we would get calls like this, a lot of the issue was the brand of pellets or someone saying they cleaned it, but not really cleaning it. What I mean by that is they would lightly scrap and vacuum it, but if you have grease and meat dripping built up over time it’s going to catch fire, especially as the ash from the pellets stick to it. I would get some tubs and break down everything and let the parts you can soak in a non abrasive cleaner and really go to town on cleaning it. Like not just a basic top layer of cleaning, like trying to get everything off.

This is where lining specific parts with aluminum foil is beneficial because some of that grease and juices build up over time and it’s very difficult to get off.

As much as the OP’s issue may be maintenance related.
I’m pretty sure there is an issue with the recent updates.

Quite a few people are having too many issues.

Strangely since Friday I have seen an issue with the auger never stopping.
This happened to me Friday as well as 3 or 4 other people. Turned my brisket into a lump of charcoal. Fortunately it was just that.

I’ve had 2 fires that I thankfully caught. My maintenance is standard practice. And I still have had 3 serious issues within the last year.

I contacted pit boss and they are sending me a new control board and temperature sensor.

They are apparently aware of an issue since either this last update or the one before. My issues started with the one before last.

Good luck and stay safe ✌🏼

Take it apart and clean it not just the grate.
