I would’ve thought yes, but my new recteq grill handles temps perfectly in morning and evening but every time I cook mid day it overshoots temps by 50 degrees! I called support and we had a good convo, updated the FW and ran it for 20 minutes and it held 220 perfectly. I just ran it today at noon for some kielbasa and cream cheese and even set to 200 it only sat at 280+ .

The only thing I can think of is that whenever I have these issues, is noon – 3 PM when our back patio is in direct sunlight, could that be what’s causing my issue? Im in Georgia FWIW.

    We Need Your Help!

We’ve noticed that recent changes in Reddit’s algorithms have made it harder for original content (OC) communities like ours to get the visibility we used to enjoy. This shift means that posts and comments aren’t getting the attention they deserve.

It definitely causes fluctuations when I cook. Big temp swings.

I have had this same issue trying to hold lower temps when smoking in direct sunlight during the summer. I started moving my smoker to a shady spot and temps went back to normal.

I do it all the time and I live just outside Phoenix Arizona where I could pretty much cook on the pavement if I really needed to. And I’m also using a Recteq.

The only thing I notice is that if I’m smoking at really low temperatures in the summers, I will get a pretty big – but quick – spike every couple of hours. It never happens during other seasons.

Never noticed a difference. Doing it right now.

I had to turn my feed rate down in the summer. It was 90 out and cooking too hot. A canopy helps also. Keeps you and the grill out of the sun.

Make sure your chimney gap is adjusted for the summer per the manual

I had an issue when I was using cheaper grills. My camp chef WW pro holds perfect. Did about a 9 hour smoke the other day, it was 95 out for most of it and I didn’t have any temp issues.

Sun can heat up the smoker by 30+ degrees easily. Hopefully if you cannot smoke in shade, which is recommended, you have a p-setting that can slow down the auger drop rate.

Get a sun shade if you can.

I wound up buying mine it’s own patio umbrella. Kinda helps.

I’ve really had bigger issues in the winter than the summer

Check your auger feed rate and other wise should be fine. Also if you are experiencing any trouble at all, call rec rec support as they are fantastic

I have a beach umbrella I set up to shade mine. It helps big time.

Surprised this hasn’t been mentioned, and this is coming from someone still shopping for their first.

The gauge of steel and insulation will also play a role on how much impact this will have with your smoker.

One reason I haven’t picked up the sear wood is it seems incredibly flimsy next to a Yoder and also even a traeger ironwood xl

Yes, those are entirely different classes of smokers, but thickness plays a role. I’ve seen it mentioned here countless times some folks have to use insulating blankets in winter, while nicer ones typically don’t having thicker gauge steel.

After about 11 am, mine is in the sun until then sun sets.

I use a thermal blanket on top of it and ever since the temps are much more manageable. Also it is good for the winter time to hold temperature better.

I had some overheating issues years ago with an older 680 and support walked me through lowering the minimum feed rate. Held a lot better after that and never had to change the rate again. I’m in SoCal though. Haven’t faced this issue with my 700, but it may help to lower that minimum feed rate value. Might need to work with support as they e locked out some of these settings in the newer machines.

I don’t have a reqtec but have been cooking at a lower temp to offset the sun. Sometimes setting my smoker 25°-50° lower than the temp I’m shooting for which ends up keeping the smoker at the appropriate temp. Anything below 225° is going to be tough mid day with no covering

Same issue with mine brother. I live in South Ga (Valdosta) so I get that crazy heat and humidity as well, I’ve adjusted my feed rate and it’s helped but still overshoots. Recteq support said this was normal, but then also told me to lower my feed rate. I have a post on my account about this exact issues and some of the replies I haven’t tried out yet but I intend do, someone suggested putting a couple pellets in the fire pot on start up to help it start the fire faster, I haven’t tried it yet but it may work. My grill is still pretty new I’m hoping the more I use it the controller will start to adjust and make this less of an issue.

I have the same problem in the South Texas summer sun on my Camp Chef Woodwind Pro. I think I will try some of these suggestions.
