Are beefsteaks ripe when red? These guys seem mighty small.

Those are ready to go. Won’t get much (if any) bigger. Pick and enjoy… and do it before you give the diehards here a heart attack 😆

Beefsteaks are one of my least favorite to grow. They’re finicky in pots and don’t grow well for me even in the ground. I recommend you find a different variety

  3. As soon as they strike color, they are done growing.

I struggle to grow tomatoes any way other than in-ground. I would try at least a 15 gallon container if you want sizable tomatoes. Even my smaller déterminâtes are in 20 gallon containers, and they’re not as productive as the in-ground ones. Tomatoes require a lot more care and fertilization in containers generally

They are definitely ripe. I think the issue is your pot is too small for a big indeterminate tomato. They need a lot of space for their roots. I have had a lot of luck growing determinate and dwarf tomatoes in grow bags of a similar size to your pot.

For this year though, I would make sure they are getting a good amount of fertilizer since it washes out of the pot very quickly. I use a liquid kelp/fish fertilizer 1-2x a month and very happy with the results.

More water might have helped. A catch tray below could help keep the pot wet. I’ve had issues with Beefsteaks as well.

Someone else got pepper joed into some small slicers instead of beefsteak too!

When the roots have minimal space to grow they do this.

Never been able to grow beefsteaks as well as other varieties. I think your soil and conditions have to really be top notch for them to consistently size well

My tomatoes are much smaller too but more this year, i did the same stuff then last year, last year larger and earlier ripe, but less and more cracked and spoiled.

I would guess it’s your soil conditions as your plant seems rather small in general.
