    I used mayo for a few months but found it to be too salty. Personal preference, butter is my choice.

    But that spicy Chipotle mayo was goooooooood.

    Butter is the only way. The flavor of mayo will never be able to compete.

  3. Butter is a far more neutral-forward flavor largely governed by salt content and overall quality, leaving far more room for the cheese and bread flavors to shine through.

    Mayo, despite being a complex flavor, is one-note in the context of grilled cheese, as it gives everything that undeniable mayo taste.

    How’s this even a debate if anyone saying mayo is getting downvoted to oblivion?
    I prefer mayo though but depends on the cheese being used. Mayo makes it “tangier” but butter is more neutral.

    Salted butter. If it stops tasting like butter I don’t want any.

    Butter because I can’t have mayo in the first place. Also you can use flavored butters to match your cheese selection so that’s a bonus.

    Mayo on bread very thin, butter in the pan. Tang and delicious butter goodness

    If it weren’t for this sub, I wouldn’t even know mayo was an option. Been eating grilled cheeses my whole life and I have never seen or heard anyone talk about using mayo instead of butter.

    Mayo is easier if you refrigerate your butter (like many in the U.S. do), especially if you have kids and are trying to make lunch quickly. But butter tastes way, way better.

    That’s like asking cheddar or Muenster. It’s whatever I feel like that day. Sometimes if I’m feeling a froggy I’ll use my garlic herb tallow for my grilled cheezy

    Both , butter on the outside, mayo and tomato and cheese on the inside.

  20. There is no need to “settle” a “debate” over a personal preference. Grilled cheese, however you like it, for the win!

    Of those two, butter. Given broader choices, though, I prefer rendered duck fat.
