New Anova users will pay a small app subscription fee ($1.99/mo). Existing users before Aug 21 will be grandfathered in.

This is a big deal. And not in a good way.

  2. FeralRatBender

And people will gladly pay it for some reason.

  3. gruntothesmitey

Best is to have a device that doesn’t need an app anyway.

  4. Independent-Fuel4962

They seem to be making some bad decisions lately. Didn’t they recently say one of the models wouldn’t connect to app anymore.

  5. Oztravels

Marketing people doing one too many lines of coke. Pass.

  6. $24 a year to use something you own? Lol, nope.

  7. SpectacularB

Never use the bluetooth on the one I have anyways. I think it used to shut off if it lost connection so I just set it manually and it’s great

  8. KarnotKarnage

How’s 24 bucks a year for something that barely requires any data or compute and doesn’t even change “small”.

Small would be less than 5 bucks a year.

  9. mediocretes

This is absolutely ridiculous. The oven is barely functional without the app.

  10. sillyshoestring

Are they going under? This reeks of desperation.

  11. AnOddSloth

Been holding off replacing my original anova. Was debating on taking advantage of the coupon, but this made the decision for me. Done with this brand now.

We don’t need an HP of sous vide

  12. browning_88

H E Double Hockey Sticks to the NO. LMAO ROFL

  13. FloppyDrone

I have a 5 year old anova. It doesn’t need an app, sure you can use it, but I don’t see te point. Do new ones need an app?

  14. bort_license_plates

I have an original Anova. Still works great. Have never felt the need for app control whether Bluetooth or Wifi.

The internet is full of recipes, I don’t need them in the app.

Recently got an Air Fryer from Instant that has a companion app with recipes – it’s useless.

Not only will I not pay a subscription to use an app to run a fucking hot water bath, this decision from them will absolutely make me second-guess whether I buy any more Anova products in the future.

Not everything needs to be a “connected” device.

  15. ScrappedAeon

This doesn’t make me want to rush out and buy Anova equipment before the cutoff, it makes me want to look for another brand entirely. Fuck this corrupt corpo greed nonsense

  16. casingpoint

I’d be mighty interested to see @ u/Sn00pig chime in on this. He really hates it when people have issues with Anova.

  17. FrenchRiverBrewer

No such fee for the Joule/Breville+ app…

  18. Uffff I was just about to buy a SousVide this weekend.

    Any brand recommendations?

  19. SloppyMeathole

Good way to kill your business. A million companies make these machines now and this one is not special. After my anova broke for like the third time I bought a no-name Chinese unit on Amazon for like half the price of the anova and it works perfectly.

This is going to be a polarizing opinion but as someone who has been a onprem/cloud infrastructure guy his whole life nothing comes for free. The app development, servers, bandwidth, etc of providing a cloud service costs money. If you’re not paying a monthly fee you are the product (selling usage data, etc). You can vote with your wallet but the fee isn’t unreasonable.

  21. DryChip4

lmao. ALL YOU DO IS KEEP WATER WARM! dafuq do I need a subscription for that.

  22. humantarget22

I don’t see what everyone is so upset about.

Already have an Anova? Great then you don’t need to pay anything and get all the same features as you currently have.

Don’t have one but want to get one and don’t want to use the app? Great then you don’t need to pay anything and get all the same features of a non-connected circulator.

Don’t have one but want to get one and do want to use the app? This is the only scenario in which you have to pay a small fee. But you know that before hand and can go with another option if that doesn’t work for you.

I mean sure it would be great if they didn’t have to do this at all, but I don’t really see why everyone is getting so upset. They aren’t taking anything away from anyone or forcing anyone to pay for anything.

  23. CarolinaCrazy91

The device works fine w/out the app.

Sure existing customers are feeling like their loosing some feature. But you’re not losing anything with your existing purchase. It will work just as it has. and they say “In the event you are an existing user, you will be grandfathered in to free usage of the app. **You helped us build Anova and our intent is that you will be grandfathered in forever.”** If they honor that, you’ll never loose the app as a feature.

But for a new customer there is the device for $99, that cooks at a set temp, and there is an App for $10 that unlocks additional features.

If you don’t want the recipes or remote connectivity, don’t pay for it. That’s all.

I don’t see the travesty in this.

  24. nolabrew

I’ve said it before, but Anova is the worst kind of company.

YEARS ago my Anova broke a week after the warranty ended and I made a post on here asking if anyone knew where I could buy some extra parts.

Someone from Anova replied and said something like “Hey Nolabrew, don’t worry amigo, we’ll go ahead and replace your unit even though it’s a little out of warranty. Send us an email at blah blah blah and let them know you talked to me on Reddit!”

I, and everyone in that post was like “wow, these guys are great!” I emailed the email and they wrote back “sorry, but we can’t because it’s out of warranty” I linked the thread and sent screen shots and they told me they escalated it but can’t replace an out of warranty product, BUT They could give me $30 off their new top of the line whatever.

I HATE companies that do this kind of shit just to look good. I hope they go out of business.

I don’t use my Anova often. The usefulness of the app to me is to have easy access to recipes or notes about recipes–for instance what temp and time I personally prefer when cooking a type of meat. And I think it’s reasonable for Anova to charge a fee to update the recipes. If a new purchaser doesn’t want the recipe function they shouldn’t install the app and just use the controls on the Anova to set time and temperature. Unless they’ve changed the engineering, the app isn’t required to use the device.

  26. feverish

Infuriating that they announced the support change for the original unit separately from this change. I’m pissed that I just bought the upgraded version with the coupon, because I am one of the few that still uses the app.

Now it’s time to look at the return policy.

  27. thecakeisali

And here I was thinking about upgrading to the Pro model. Hard pass…

  28. Guy-brush

Lol, I just got my first Anova this Monday and noticed I still use the joule app more for the recipes and better UX. there’s nothing in the Anova app that I need. I downloaded and played around with it Monday and haven’t touched it since

  29. mainstreetmark

Well, that’s the end of Anova. Their competition will eat them up.

  30. RooooooooooR

Wow, I had been considering upgrading to an anova. Looks like it’s actually a downgrade now.

  31. Their blog post accepts comments. Make sure they know exactly how you feel.

  32. CheeksMcGillicuddy

So $24/year for a cookbook…because connected to a device I own, on my own network will never be something paid for.

  33. LuckoftheFryish

Have to fucking pirate my kitchen appliances. Happy 2024 everyone.

  34. ihavetime

Yeah, this definitely ensures that I won’t be buying Anova ever.
