Have just run out of wood chunks and noticed I can get double split wood logs from my BBQ store for significantly cheaper – same as the wood chunks, just quite a bit bigger.
Having a BJ3, my thinking is if I place a single piece on the bottom of the basket this should last me and entire cook, rather than 4-5 smoking chunks.
I’ve not seen this done before so wanted to check if the reason was I was missing something basic and fundamental, before I go ahead and purchase 20kgs worth.
Example pic included to give an idea of size .

I would not do it. The problem with the BJ3 is it gets to hot too easily. To combat this you have to knock the air flow way down. I tend to use the wood chips in my BJ3 instead of chunks. My reason is the chips will tend to burn instead of just smolder like big chunks do. Smoldering does not give you a clean burn. But that’s just my thoughts.
I do this all the time with great results
I have a BJ3 and I always use chunks and integrate them into the basket with the lump.
