This kind of bullshit SO needs legislation.

Something went seriously wrong at Anova. I always thought my next sous vide would be an Anova, now this seems increasingly unlikely….

  3. mrarmyant

Fucking cocksuckers. This is why they locked down local access for things like homeassistant.

If you already have an account, you’re grandfathered into free…..but I wouldn’t put it past them to get rid of that after a while.

Anecdotally, I never use the app or remote functions, anyhow. I get my recipes elsewhere and the kitchen is a few steps away from my living room. I set it, let it go, and walk away until it’s done. Never saw a need for the app, even though I do have it. I’m sure there I use cases (I’ve heard of people filling with ice water for a delayed start,) so I could see that sucking if you do something like this regularly.

My Anova has been making noises for a couple years now. Once it goes kaput I guess I’ll look at another manufacturer.

Trash move. If you want MRR provide real value to your customers. Stop throwing darts at the wall to please the VCs on your board.

It is like they (Anova) forgot the first time when they made the heater device blue tooth only. The internet went ape-shit on them and they rolled back to allowing non-app use. Seriously, I think bad of people who use the app. The device is the simplest ever and there is something wrong if you need to always look on your phone for it. Be free, disconnect yourself.

The PE/VC infiltration of all modern growing companies leading to subscription requirements for ongoing revenue for things that don’t really provide ongoing value is a nightmare. So many products that don’t really provide anything worth a subscription out there. Vampire finance bros, fuck them

  9. PsychAce

That’s crazy. Straight up corporate greed.

  10. raincntry

Don’t get me wrong, I think this is terrible but do you really need an app to sous vide? isn’t the beauty of it that you can simply set it and ignore it for a long time?

  11. Erlendss93

Cool, this is gonna backlash on them. After 2 anova devices, I will definitely look elsewhere for my next one, like everyone else.

  12. People use the app? I’ve looked at it half a dozen times ever. I think I turned it on once via Bluetooth. I wouldn’t have even noticed if it got deleted. The whole point of sous vide is the massive time error bar. What a ridiculous move, subscribers, zero.

  13. ElefantPharts

Who here actually uses the app? Is there a real use case for it? I thought I had it but it must have been deleted years ago and I’ve never noticed. I mean, recipes are abundant literally anywhere online. Are people actually putting steaks in cold water in the morning, letting it sit all day, and then turning it on a couple hours before they get home? I can’t think of anything else but that seems absurd to me.

  14. chris_ro

2€ for what? They say the app contains thousands of recipes. But in reality it feels like less than 50. And half of them are from serious eats. A free website.

  15. Jesus. I am so glad my OG Anova device (version 1.0) is just a dumb device with no connection to anything.

I feel like if someone just replicated the dead simple UX of this stick, they could eat ANova’s lunch. And they’d deserve it.

  16. AThousandBloodhounds

I don’t use the app but still it’s a shitty thing to do.

  17. IAMA_Plumber-AMA

Everyone wondered why I was so against IoT stuff.

Well, this is part of the reason why.

  18. OstrichOk8129

Well guess I won’t be buying Anova ever again.

  19. WingKev

Pretty annoyed hearing this, although not in that pool of being affected. I still own the old the original anova’s which they don’t support the app anymore (not that it bothers me) but I was looking at the oven which I hear requires the app a fair bit.. to top it off.. the app usefulness is quite minimal.. so the audacity to charge is quite rich…

  20. jsaf420

This really sucks but isn’t the whole point of sous vide that you don’t need to babysit it? You usually have an hours long window to check the food. The remote functionality really isn’t something that seems that useful especially when compared to like a pellet grill/bbq controller fan.

Glad this was announced the week before I bought one as a gift for my partner. We’ve been waiting to start doing this for a bit. Will now look at literally any other brand..probably will spend less money too.

  22. ThisIsTheeBurner

I had one in checkout for my birthday. Shopping other brands since I’ve seen this

  23. Simple-Purpose-899

After Bill at u/AnovaCulinary came in making excuses for their garbage company filling the world with e waste due to their greed I’m still waiting on what kind of bullshit excuses he has for this one. Smells like they were bought out by a vulture capitalist, or they just naturally evolved into predators. Either way fuck em, I’ll never buy another one.

  24. theslats

By a Joule for your next device, you say? On it!

  25. sqqqrly

If in the market, consider a Strate SV from Monoprice. $70. No subscriptions fees.

These fees are happening elsewhere in other markets. BMW in some countries is charging monthly fees to have heated seats.
