Trying your hand at self sufficiency? Learn from a pro! In this week’s episode Ben visits gardener and fellow YouTuber Huw Richards to find out his secrets to a hugely productive garden that yields insane harvests! Just wait until you see how much food this small garden can produce. It may be small but it’s mightily impressive.
Huw’s garden was sown, grown, harvested and weighed for his latest book, The Self-Sufficiency Garden, co-authored with chef Sam Cooper. We reckon it’s a jolly good read. You can find out more about the book or order yourself a signed copy here: https://www.regenerative.press/book-store

Thanks for checking in and watching this latest video, which was filmed last summer in early August. Huw's got quite the setup hasn't he! Everything in the garden you see was sown, grown, harvested and weighed for his latest book, The Self-Sufficiency Garden, co-authored with chef Sam Cooper. I reckon it's a jolly good read. You can find out more about the book or order yourself a signed copy here: https://www.regenerative.press/book-store Cheers for watching! 😃🌱🍅
Rutabaga mash: 4 potatoes, 3 carrots, equal size rutabaga, boil until soft and mash with a bit of butter and water from the boiling. 😉 Great with bratwurst or sausage.
two of my favorite gardeners! what a wonderful and educational video. Thank you, happy growing.
Love Huw! Great mashUp❤
It looks like it doesn't much time to set up either!
I am so excited. My copy of the Self – sufficiency garden.'book has arrived. Can't wait to get started
I loved the comment that wintered kale sends up “poor person’s broccoli” because I was just out snipping mine off and eating them!
Really lovely to see Huw's garden from your point of view and tour it as a visitor!
I want to hang out with you two in your gardens, and would love to have you over in my humble little garden. The two of you and james prigioni "straight out of jersey" are my trinity of spirit garden god fathers.
Este homem é incrível 😊
How do you stop the insects eating all that isn’t covered?
Congratulations . Amazing garden.
Please try eating the leaves from your squash, melons, sweet potatoes. Double duty vegetables.
Hope u learn alot😊
LEARN A LOT HERE😊😊😊 YES A LOT
From New Jersey to ol'"Jersey" = Jersey Strong °2!
Thank you for biggin up James Prigioni!
We need a source for Astorian tree cabbage in the USA.
This was an excellent video, two enthusiastic veg growers just talking growing ! More another day please.😊
Everything home grown is better than store bought. I always say that everyone should become self-sufficient in at least one consumable… whether that's gardening, honey as a beekeeper (myself), maple syrup, etc. It is truly rewarding to eat the fruits of your labor; there is something life altering about it. Last year I grew bell peppers, chilis, and Carolina Reapers, and grabbing a few for dinner from my own back yard (figuratively speaking; they were in pots alongside my driveway for adequate sunlight) was something special.
I love it ❤
How do people get niche seeds like honeydew tomato and dwarf kale for uses like this? If I'm just growing for two people I don't need 50 seeds of ten different tomato varieties for example.
Where can I find a huw?. you're both amazing, great video excellent talents 😍 lovely produce 😊 what more can you ask.thank you gentleman 👏👏
Ben & Hew great to see the presentation together – so interesting to see how you two talk and discuss (fascinating)
I had the same thing happen in 2022, I tried to tell everyone. Mine was over purchased manure from a landscape company. I'm so sorry but thanks for letting people know. Happen to a lot of people. They were supposed to out law grazon but I don't think they did. Now I use my own tree chips and I use peat moss and mushroom compost. No straw only pinestraw.
Hello, I really like your garden, I'm building my garden, please come visit me 11:46
You don't actually save much growing your own, most people don't add in the cost of maintaining it, keeping things healthy and keeping the pests at bay and not to mention the time you need to spend I. The garden maintaining it, nothing is free
I am literally obsessed with his garden. So organised and thought through
Wow. I don't see one bug. Nice for you all.
❤🫛🥬🍅❤
A couple of years ago i had a beef tomato that weighed 500g. The kg challenge would have been easy with sizes like that
This is the first year i used netting, i didnt want to but every single one of my planta got ripped up by birds in the first week of planting out
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
I loved this! My two favourite Youtubers! (searching for Honeycombs in Canada as we speak)
It is wonderful that YouTube creators watch other creator's videos. I also watch James Prigioni's channel. It just shows humility and that we can all learn something from each other. It's impressive.
Great video, inspires me to build this type of garden.
Awesome that you both met up to produce this video; huge fans of both of your channels. THANK YOU! Cheers!
20 kilos or artichoke?
gonna be blunt there is no such thing as a Self-Sufficient Garden because you still have to buy other stuff, compost, mulch, bug/bird netting, pots and containers, wood for raised beds, etc.
And yes i know you can make your own compost but i have never met a gardener who can produce all his own compost from his own garden alone…. unless they have 10 acres of land and a horse paddock or something.
Such a fun tour. I really enjoyed this.
I love both of these guys but they both describe their gardens as "small" or "as big as the average garden". Lol both their gardens are massive by most people's standards
What is the total area of this garden?
Thank you for your videos, Your book is on my christmas list! I am extremely fortunate enough to have a garden, in which I am developing an 7x5m growing area just for beds, your channel is giving me loads of inspiration 🙏
Some people have a very strange idea of the 'average garden' – !!!
