Complete site. This really should be illegal. Where is the protection for a consumer? I bought a device with Bluetooth capability. If the manufacturer refuses to allow access to a feature I paid for, I deserve compensation, not a damn advert for a new device.

I never use the app anymore anyway. I just set the temp, look at the clock, and walk away.

  2. yabbadabbadotoyou

Total BS on their part. I was about to buy one and glad I didn’t. Keeping my old Joule until it dies.

  3. MistakenAnemone

what happens if you just don’t update the app? also, BT on SV probes has and always will be a gimmick. you are not losing out on the primary functionality of the probe, just a redundant means of interface.

  4. billj457

I have the OG Anova and I have never downloaded the app, what do you even need the app for? You set the temp and you’re done. Maybe start a stopwatch on your phone to know exactly how long it’s been in there for but with how forgiving sous vide cooking is, even that’s a bit overkill IMO.

  5. Daswiftone22

This is exactly why I refuse to buy anything internet connected that doesn’t need to be, if I can help it. They can turn your property into a cool looking paperweight with the flip of a switch. They should refund if they’re going to do this.

  6. tiagodj

My guess is that in the terms and conditions somewhere there is a buried clause where it says they may terminate the service at some point.

It sucks. They should at least open up the specs for the open source community.

  7. Simple-Purpose-899

I exclusively use the app for remote control. Bill at u/AnovaCulinary will try to make excuses why their thirst for maximum profits will create so much e waste, but now with subscription app we know why. What a garbage fucking company that I used to support.

ETA: Notice how he’s been silent since the absolute shit show three weeks ago? Yeah, they know they fucked up, but they don’t care in the least. Now they’re doubling down with this new bullshit. SaaS for a fucking sous vide machine, with Bluetooth control! The mind boggles at their stupidity.

  8. RIPRIF20

all we can do is 1 start the shit out of everything Anova and hope they reconsider.

  9. ThermoNuclearPizza

Don’t worry! When you buy the new one you’re grandfathered in to the new app!

#until they yank the fucking carpet out from under you again, which they mentioned they’re going to do in the fine print.

After Four Tries, I’ve decided it’s time to say goodbye to Anova.

After my fourth original unit finally gave up the ghost, I’ve decided it’s just not worth the hassle anymore. Here’s my saga: I’ve had two units break while still under warranty, and, to Anova’s credit, they did replace them.

But here’s the kicker—the replacements barely lasted six months before failing in the exact same way. The only one still limping along is the unit I bought while waiting for one of those warranty replacements.

Every single one of them failed the same way: the capacitive touch control panel cover eventually loses its seal and detaches. It’s frustrating, especially when you consider this is supposed to be a premium product.

At this point, I’ve lost faith in the brand. Has anyone else had similar experiences, or have I just been unlucky?

  11. TonyDanza888

Huh, didn’t even know here was an app.

  12. philrich12

Never registered mine – but downloaded the app (and use it).

Am I out of luck on the discount for the new device?

It reminds me of the [PLAATO Airlock](https://plaato.io/#) geared towards homebrewers. Out of the blue they decided they are [shutting down their homebrew line](https://www.instagram.com/p/CzGlkdbszOa/?igsh=aTJwOTJrdDFnanRy) and only focusing on the professional versions. Yes we still have another year to use the product but as Homebrewing is a hobby I never plan to go pro.

It makes me sad to see companies do things like this. When my Anova sous vide dies, I’ll be looking for a different product. Granted like many others I rarely use their app but it’s the principle of it all.

    Rant over. Haha

  14. lief101

Sounds like someone should jailbreak and open source a new “OS”.

  15. LakerPupper

Umm… in the 4+ years, I have never used the app or connected to Bluetooth. It’s not like they’re bricking your device. You can control temp and time physically. lol 💁🏽‍♂️

  16. starkiller_bass

I love my Joule but it doesn’t even have any controls on it. When they EOL that thing it’s dead in the water

  17. m1chaelgr1mes

I hear that they’re going to charge for a subscription now.

  18. djdeforte

I just used it last night… without the app. For the 100th time and it worked just as good as the first time… without the app. And when it dies. I will be buying from a different company.

  19. Scratch_Disastrous

Just express your opinion with your wallet. Don’t buy another Anova and maybe you’ll be spared from the other notification that describes their new app subscription policy and pricing. This company is in a transitional phase, going from “exciting and cool customer-friendly San Francisco based fun-loving cooking gadget company” to “no nonsense, bottom-line revenue generating business unit of Electrolux, tasked with extracting every dollar possible no matter what the impact”.

The beauty is that we don’t have to deal with this nonsense and be treated this way. There are other options. Speaking for myself, I won’t be buying another Anova.

  20. djsploits

So they offer you 50% discount on the Anova Precision Cooker 3.0 to try and keep you reeled in, then in the small print it says that the discount expires June 30, 2024…….

  21. angryredmonkey

I thank them for convincing me to never buy one of their products. No need to waste time comparison shopping Anova now.

  22. Inert_Oregon

The number of people in here defending the decision by saying “I never used the app anyway so neither should you” is breathtaking, absolute garbage people.

  23. HourWorking2839

As If I am going to pay for the same companies product ever again. The next one will lose support just the same or have a kill switch installed already…

I mean, it’s not like it is such an irreplaceable product anyway and there is no other stick around, no?

  24. Like many, I made a hole in a cooler – specifically for this Anova. My sous vide has now broken and I considered upgrading to an Anova Pro.

With this news, I’d rather buy a new cooler & cut it to suit a different brand than support these bunch of cunts. Every single person who I know with an Anova product has echoed my sentiment.

  25. MiddleExpensive9398

Welp, mine apparently won’t work now.

I’ll never buy anything from that company again.

  26. CappinPeanut

I think there’s something that Anova needs to hear.

    You. Are. Not. Netflix.

We are on a subreddit of people who love to sousvide. If you’re looking for a group that uses their sous vide more than average, it’s right here. You’d be hard pressed to find people here, who are super users, to pay for this. This will hurt your sales, and I sure as hell hope it does.

  27. juliuspepperwoodchi

It’s one thing if a company just goes under, that still sucks, but you can’t expect them to keep supporting it.

    THIS is bullshit though.

  28. fd6944x

never used the app anyway. can understand why people are upset though

  29. _rockethat_

Will you still be able to use the device? Just without the app? I never used apps for such things, I’m curious.

  30. Draskuul

Got mine off Massdrop. I just submitted a return request. Why the hell not give it a try…

  31. glendaleterrorist

Oh, this is kind of BS. I never use the app the Bluetooth none of that ever really worked very well.

  32. busted_flush

My wheel never worked properly but I didn’t care because I always just used the app.

  33. Digitalzombie90

we have been supporting…ahahah. Don’t build it in a way where you “have” to support it. My old fridge is going strong for 30 years and no one “has” to support it,

This is what happens when sw companies/tech founders go in to hardware manufacturing. They try to turn everything in to a shitty piece of software as service platform, even mechanical devices.

There should be some massive penalties in law for companies trying to pull things like this. But there arent…because these companies (and their much stronger investors) pay the bills and lobby.

  34. Sure_Ad_3390

these fuckers will never see another dime of mine. Im pissed I bought their combioven.

There is zero cost to simply keeping existing local functionality. There is no reason local wifi/bluetooth needs to go away. It costs nothing to keep these supported in the same app.

    simple greed powered cash grab.

  35. SiMachinist

Now they’ve put a lifespan on their products you can expect reliability on future models to tank. Someone is pissed off these lasted ten years.
