Cant describe, but I really would love a big giant bowl of steamed mussels and clams

They’re not for me personally, kind of a grittier texture and a unique flavor. They’re not bad just not my cup of tea!

I’ve had them only once. Flavor was perfectly fine. Not really fishy or even shellfishy. Although that surely changes by brand or flavor of the can. Texture of mine were kind of crumbly. I compared them to the texture of a can of super cheap spaghetti and meatballs. The low grade meatballs just kinda crumble away. That’s what my can of mussels was like. I was thrown off by the fact that about 1/2 of the mussels in the can had a big fat beard of seaweed still in them. I don’t know if that is standard or maybe a lack of quality from the Patagonia brand can I had. I picked all the seaweed out but I suppose it’s probably edible and maybe even a bonus for some people.

Smoked mussels are like smoked oysters… Less crumbly, more meaty/chewy, less oily/fishy/rich flavour.

Honestly they aren’t that different from steamed, aside from temperature.

Never had canned mussels but that TJ’s Crunchy Chili Onion is a lovely addition to sardines.

i eat them on top of Ruffles potato chips, with a dash of sriracha.

Mussels in tins are a bit mushy.
The texture is like biting into a sauteed mushroom, sorta. It’s soft, but a very slight bounce and chew. It will be slightly more crumbly than a tinned fish like sardines or mackerel.
The bulk of the mussel meat is in the main body of it giving the above texture, but there will be an outer ring that the mussel uses to attach itself to the shell that is slightly chewier.
Each museel piece is bite size and easy to eat, like 3-4 bites before swallowing.
The flavour, depending on how its stored, can be briny. Briny meaning salty, meaty, umami but with a potentially bitter sea taste. It’s not sweet like a raw oyster can get, for example. It’s a bit more earthy.
Having them smoked is the best way to try it for the first time since the smoke flavour will overpower any sort of unfamiliar mussel taste. Smoked mussels are great on their own or in salads or on crackers/croustinis/bread/etc.

The way I got into them is with the very delicious seafood soup at my local Vietnamese restaurant. Comes in ginger and cilantro leaves delicious with white rice and green lime chili. Boiled or steamed are amazing

They’re a little funky. Tastes like the ocean texture is fatty and tender.

The Trader Joe’s ones are quite good. They taste smoky and salty and are pretty easy to chew.

I love mussels – tinned in escabeche are particularly good IMO, on a cracker with cream cheese, or just with salted crisps.

That looks like my wife’s dinner 😂

They kind of vary, sometimes slightly mushy, sometimes chewy, a little gritty at times, but they’re good! Some people cant stand them but they’re so good on crackers

To me they remind me of organic matter preserved in formaldehyde. If you ever studied anatomy and physiology you know what I’m talking about.
