Doesn't look safe to eat is it?

  1. Its just oxidized. That happens if its not pumped full of carbon monoxide or something. beef turns brown in contact with oxygen. it stays bright red if its doused in carbon monoxide.

use your nose. does it smell bad?

  2. Blowmeos

What’s it smell like? The standard is when in doubt throw it out but I take more risks when it comes to beef. When it starts to smell rancid I toss.

Doesn’t look perfect but I’ve also cooked worse and been fine. How does it smell?

It’s fine but eat sooner rather than later. Season well and I’d go no less than medium with temp. But obviously do a smell test first. If it smells rancid throw it out.

My stomach sort of turned when I saw that. And I held my breath; I didn’t want to inhale. I’d throw it out.

It might be okay, but unfortunately we’ve marketed that bright red packaged meat. With it open ……ugh!

It looks oxidized. If it smells fine you’re good.

  7. Adept-Mulberry-8720

Not for me! Maybe you’re okay with it!

  8. Emergency_Property_2

Yeah it’s safe. I buy steak that like that in the clearance because. It actually more tender because it’s aged. (You don’t want to see what dry aged beef looks like.)

Maybe fine but Reddit can’t replace touch and smell, gonna be a little strong beef smell minimum and that would likely be fine.

I would not have purchased that but I’m picky with the quality of food I buy, I will always buy the good shit.

I wouldn’t eat it. Risk vs reward

That’s what meat looks like if they don’t put stuff in it to make it look red. Basically as soon as it contacts the air, it goes from red to this.

  12. Wellthisisjustnuts

Give it the sniff test. If it passes, make sure to cook it all the way through 👍🏻

You should watch foods that built America. Ketchup was invented to help mask bad tasting meat before refrigeration. It looks great just cook it well in case it was mechanically tenderized. Some bacteria can get to the centre.

  14. Ryan-paul96

If it’s not pink in the middle I wouldn’t eat it! My steaks always cooked rare lol

Don’t be scared a little aged meat is actually more tender. I used to work in a Japanese restaurant that serves aged teriyaki steak up to the stage before decomposition and they’re very pricey. Just go ahead and grill it mate!

next time find the fresh red marble meat…still have to smell it first…all the best bro

If it smells sour then no, if it smells like butter then it’s probably gonna be awesome

The number of people spewing misinformation in this thread is embarrassing. I worked in a meat department about 3 years. If it doesn’t smell like it’s starting to rot, it’s fine.

Meat for grocery sale is treated with carbon monoxide and kept sealed or frozen.

The brightness of the red color is not an indicator of quality. *Not at all*. It makes for a visually appealing product that people want to buy, because we’ve been trained by marketing to believe it.

I’ve opened packs of bright red steaks that were spoiled and smelled like roadkill, and I’ve opened steaks that look like the picture above that smell like, well, perfectly normal meat, so I ate it.

Eat it. If you crap out your intestine…it was bad.

  20. LateResponseEmma

Smell it and you will know. trust your nose and guts. Throw it if you feel it smells bad

  21. MrDufferMan3335

It’s all good, just oxidized. Brown is fine as long as it smells fine

  22. i8myface

Believe me..if it’s off and you cook it…you will know. Dead flesh reeeeeks

  23. Aggravating-Bug1769

My friend would eat green steak but I don’t, if it’s slimey and if it smells don’t eat it.

  24. AlienGaze

My grandpa was a butcher. Gray meat is the best meat (as long as it’s not ground.) It’s aged and tender. Safe to eat and better than the younger, redder stuff. But shhhh, don’t tell. People don’t know and are scared of it, so it usually gets marked down

  25. HankChinaski1964

I was a Chef. Return it. I’d return it just for its ugliness.
