A lady was giving away some Carolina reapers because she had to many so I drove an hour round trip to pick them up. From the get go I knew I wanted some reaper powder and was super excited. Flash forward and I’m too impatient to sun dry them so I decided to put them in the oven on low to dry them out. My wife then complains of the overwhelming smell taking over the apartment so in order to speed things up my dumb self turns on the broiler only to realize moments later what a mistake that was. The smell becomes very intense and I go to pull them out only to be hit in the face with a cloud of smoke that I also inhaled. I quickly get my wife, 8 month old and our dog outside while I feel like I’m dying from coughing to the point that I cannot breathe. This coughing goes on for hours and I felt awful for days afterwards. The apartment smelled awful for weeks. In the end I got what I wanted but at quite a cost but a lesson learned. Long story short, be careful with dangerous peppers lol.

Get a dehydrator, DO NOT cut open the peppers, 140°F /60°C, check after 36 hours the run 8 hour increments after until fully dry. Takes time, zero smell or gassing out the house. Chocolate reaper and peach ghost make a lovely combo.

I’m planning on making powder, (first time) thought the oven on low was fine way to dry them. Should I just leave my peppers in the sun to dry?

When dealing with hot peppers, fucking up yourself and/or your family is a right of passage. You learn pretty quick from this point on.

I just dehydrated about 20 reapers yesterday and a couple hours in I flipped them over my bare hands. I thought about what I did and licked my fingers to make sure they didn’t have any traces. Later I took a leak and regretted it for an hour.
