So it gets stuck all the damn time, I’ve seen the series 2 with a different style. Are they swappable and if so where do you buy one?

I had to remove it and hit on the floor to get it to move

    Nothing a bit of degreaser wouldn’t fix…

You could get a smoke ware replacement. When I do a clean burn I toss my daisy wheel in the fire and re season like normal cast iron.

The beauty of this cap is that you can just burn it with the rest of your Joe to clean the grease. Lightly oil and wipe off as much as you can with paper towel. Whatever is left keeps it from rusting. It will outlive you. KJ sells their Kontroll Tower. But it does get stuck also if you don’t keep it clean of grease. And the paint strips off. And that one can’t be burned. It’s aluminum or something. Smokewares has a nice SS version if you want third party. Personally I would keep that cap. But if you have the budget and want try something new, by all means do what pleases you. But make sure you burn and oil that cap for storage.

I put Smokeware caps on both my Joe Jr and Classic 3. Much better than the daisy wheel or kontrol tower.

Just get it hot next burn off, let it cool, wash it with dish soap, dry it off, cover it in a high temp oil and bake it a little bit with the residual heat of the burn off.

I got mine second hand it’s smooth as butter now.

Thank you everyone! If it’s similar issues with others then it just makes me want to stick with the original and change up my care method. Appreciate everyone’s help!

I’ve had mine for 4.5 years, and literally never had this problem. What did you do to it? Does it have just a ton of baked on grease on the underside, or something? Whatever the problem, unless you get to the bottom of it, it will likely follow you to whatever got next.

It’s not a defective product design. I’d contend that its simplicity is a strength.

YES, you can swap out a chimney from the series 2/Series 3 with no problem. I did it on my series 1. The new ones are like $40 directly from KJ.

There is a stainless steel version of the kontrol tower but it is stupid expensive, just clean yours and you’ll be fine

Don’t bother with the “kontrol tower” from the KJ2 the paint flakes off

I longed for the upgrade for similar reasons. All of the upgrades feel like downgrades once I got them. The aluminum control tower is super janky, it also sticks, the paint immediately flakes off, etc

I also don’t care for the air hinge 😵

When I had a KJC1 and this happened, I would slide the chimney off and put it inside the grill as it heated up. It didn’t take much for the grease on the daisy wheel to loosen up enough to be able to open it up.

To avoid it from happening, clean the daisy wheel after each cook with a quick wipe down. Also, if you have a grill cover, I’d just leave the daisy wheel in the open position when not in use. This way, if it gets sticky, you can start your charcoal and still have air flow right away.

I’ve had no issues with the kontrol tower from Kamado Joe
