got charged kitchen appreciation fee at paperboy. I thought kitchen labour was built into the $20 biscut and $6 orange juice?

    This bullshit is spreading nationwide

    Don’t pay these fees.

  2. Shoddy_Ad7511

The $20 biscuit is to line the pockets of the owner and greedy investors

  3. Feeling-Collection23

This sort of thing is exactly why junk fee legislation is an easy win with voters.

  4. RobbinAustin

$3.75 for drip coffee might be more egregious than a “kitchen appreciation fee”.

At least to me, any percentage on top of the bill is a tip. I tip whatever I normally would less whatever added percentage. If the restaurant doesn’t have some text on the menu or posted somewhere reassuring me that the added percentage is indeed a mandatory tip, I don’t eat there again / try to avoid eating there in the first place

Just draw your line wherever you want and stay behind it with this dumb stuff

They are (likely) trying to cover credit card processing fees. They range from 2.8-3% depending on the card. It’s just pushing the cost back to the customer versus them dealing with the cost themselves.

  7. $20 is insane for a chicken biscuit. Bird Bird is half the price and probably twice as good.

But you get that free tiny rice crispy treat, so it evens out

  9. Lord_Bling

Out of all that the $1.94 is one of the least offensive things on the bill.

Paperboy is so overrated! Their “famous” pancake was mid at best. I’ll take the pancake at Better Half any day. Cheaper and tastier.

Look, mister, there’s two kinds of dumb, a guy that gets naked and runs out in the snow and barks at the moon, and a guy who pays $83 dollars for breakfast for two at 9:30am when he could’ve made a better breakfast at home for $5 bucks.

I am all for the small business owner or ANY business owner for that matter, that is trying to survive. Had a couple businesses in my lifetime. But this is getting to be more like a “rake” in a card game. After a while it really adds up. And if the counter to the argument is inflationary, some supply chain commodities have gone down. Any takers in creating a list of places that charges these “fill in the blank” fees so a person can review them prior to visiting any establishments and avoid choosing those eateries?

This 3% nonsense and blaming wages really needs to go. There’s been a lot of this posted lately. They’re clearly covering credit card processing fees, which is whatever, but calling it employee appreciation is horseshit.

Anyone work(ed) there that can confirm or deny if they received the 3%?

  14. FalseConsequence4184

This is some west coast BULLSHIT. Jaysus, what the fuck

  15. Last_Spare

I can’t get over the $12 dollar pancake. Shiii yall come to mine and I’ll make you never ending pancake stacks for that price.

  16. Conscious_Raisin_436

I just don’t understand why they can’t increase prices 3%. Kitchen cost is fixed overhead.

Can we get a pinned megathread with a list of restaurants with junk fees?

  18. MrTrees_

Food is decent, no where near worth what they charge though.

  19. handofluke

Their food isn’t close to good enough for those prices, even without that bullshit fee. I’ve had better breakfasts at Jim’s.

  20. kungfugilly

I love me some Paperboy but sheesh, $6 for orange juice and $5 for hot tea when a tea bag costs 10 cents at the store?

  21. Plenty_Late

Bro why are you mad about an extra dollar you spend $70 on breakfast LOL

  22. MordantWastrel

    Fiance used to work there.

The biscuit is probably their most popular item. It’s not ‘a biscuit’, it’s biscuits, gravy, and fried chicken, if memory serves. I ordered it regularly!

The orange juice is crazy but they fresh squeeze it. Weird decision in my book because it’s just too much money but it’s an intentional premium choice on their part and it’s been that way forever.

The appreciation charge is on the menu and yeah, I don’t like it either, but it’s not uncommon among the upscale places like that. Paperboy still has lines around the block during prime time and just opened a second location, so they’re doing something right.

We used to go to paperboy almost every weekend.

They changed the menu once, then twice, both with price increases. So we stopped being able to afford it as often.

Next, the had some Instagram influencer post about them, and it became nearly impossible to eat with no reservation before 9 AM.

Our favorite pastry was the guava danish, our son eventually was dubbed the danish boy there. The final straw for us was when they got rid of any ‘time intensive’ pastries.

My family wanted this spot to be our weekend place, but their greed drove us away. We miss the paperboy of years ago

  24. addicted2weed

I mean they didn’t charge you an Instagram-selfie fee, and let’s admit it… people only go to paperboy for the ‘gram.

  25. nobadtimes

Man, I wanted to try this place out for years. Fuck that shit. The prices are what they are unfortunately but that’s wild.

  26. blueberrylemony

$6 hot tea!? Man it’s rough out here :/

  27. kmfontaine2

There are so many restaurants in Austin, just don’t go to this one. Their prices are ridiculous.

  28. suqmamod

A lot of places will take it off if you ask. If not, take it out of the tip
