Art Work (as in a gift): Flattish can with pretty bluish modern design printed on the removeable side with five trout on the right with what looks like tree limbs overlaid, I assume to indicate hardwood.
Easy to open or durable: Easy to open flattish tin.
Appearance in tin/jar: medium size fillets in a slightly yellowish oil
Smell: wife: “smells like smoked ham, hahaha, I’m only kidding. But it has a pleasant smoked, a mild smoked smell. ”
Liquid taste: wife: “mmm, this has a nice smoked flavor” shaking head approvingly “good, whats next?” while grabbing a fork.
Individual fish appearance and spine crunchiness: fillet, so no spine. Removed one piece to plate.
Individual fish flavor: wife: “it’s a mild fish, and it has a very nice smoky flavor. Beats sardines”, me: “no way”. Wife laughs : ” it’s a dry flake, it’s not moist, (takes another bite) it’s very dry, but it has a very nice flavor.” me”so the flavor is in the oil, like it’s such a large piece, it’s not sucking up the smoky flavor?” wife: “no the smoky flavor is in the fish, it’s a nice mild , it’s not overpowering, I mean, the smoke is throughout the taste of the fish.” continues eating: “sorry to compare to a non-vegetarian, non-fish item, but it’s like Canadian bacon has a smoked taste to it, this has a smoked taste and as you can see I’m not running away” continues eating the piece, munch, munch “and it’s gone”.
remaining contents(counting the peppercorns, etc.): yellowish oil
Servings per conatiner: 1
Sodium per serving (mg): 490
Sodium per can (mg): 490
Aftertaste: wife: “the aftertaste isn’t bad, you still have a pleasant taste, it’s not overpowering, it’s nice.”
Would buy again: Yes, for wife. No omega 3 or calcium listed, she likes it because it tastes like Canadian bacon.
Would recommend: Yes, for someone who likes Canadian bacon.
Pantry stock or tin or 2 2 tins for wife
After thoughts: So my wife ate most of this, she usually takes the smallest of pieces, say like for a microscope slide. I assume office safe, since it doesn’t smell like fish to me, no Omega 3’s listed, no calcium, so for the sake of my health needs I probably wouldn’t get it, and it smells like Canadian Bacon, meh. But I guess I have to keep a tin or 2 around for her. On the other hand it seems to attract my wife, not make her run away.

I think I missed that one at Trader Joe’s or they were out. I did just open the Grilled Sardines from TJs for lunch today. I was not impressed. It had a taste that is difficult to describe except to say it had an artificial, processed flavor or maybe aftertaste. I have two more TJ’s cans to try. Hoping those will be better.
Thanks for the review!

thank you for the review. it sounds like this is a gateway tin for non-sardine fans, and i’ll keep it in mind.

I am most familiar with the TJs and tried Cole’s trout today and I like the TJs better!

This one does have a strong smoke/salt flavor on its own, but it’s incredible as an ingredient. Makes a fantastic sandwich or dip!

The fish itself is nice but the canola oil almost ruins it. I drain it well and pat it all off then drizzle some real olive oil or a sauce on.

Canola oil tho

Ate some yesterday. Not bad, but the texture was very canned tuna-like. As OP said, a little too much on the mild/bland side.

The Trader Joe’s smoked trout is a workhorse of canned fish. Always reliable. Miss the mackerel.

I really like this one, I put it on pasta (minus the oil) and it has a pleasant smoky taste that isn’t overpowering. Not too bland but has a nice texture. Good for making smoked fish spread.
