My son's birthday is in a few days so I bought a couple cake mixes to test out what I was gonna do for him. This is the first thing I tried and it's absolutely delicious, moist, flavorful and festive for spooky season 😈
I prepared the cake mix as in the directions except instead of a full cup of water as directed I used half a cup of water and half a cup of pumpkin butter. The pumpkin flavor is not overwhelming in the slightest, not too sweet, and it baked perfect (25 mins @ 325, two 9×9 round pans). I'm just super jazzed my first attempt came out so well and wanted to share!

i fucking love a bumped up mix cake. devil’s food with a can of cherry pie filling instead of oil is crazy btw. also trading coffee for water.
Pumpkin butter! Never heard of that, is it like apple butter? (Sweetened and boiled for hours on slow heat?)
A can of pumpkin puree in a spiced cake mix is also delicious.
Box cake mix + can of soda
You can get some great combos. Devil’s food with coke is good, and so is vanilla cake with orange soda. White or lemon cake with a sprite is somehow dense and light at the same time and is amazing
I bet it would be bomb with apple butter, too.
💦💦
I use spice cake (unprepared)and one can pumpkin purée, and spices. Can add chocolate chips etc. Make muffins or cake or bread. Cook as directed.
I make homemade pumpkin butter in the crockpot at this time every year. Can, freeze give out as neighbor gifts with pumpkin bagels.
I’m going to gain five pounds from this thread…
How moist is super moist?
I wish I knew about this when I was close to one a couple of weeks ago 😭 but also instead of water, try half and half
I just read a jazzy upgrade to use sour cream instead of oil. It was good.
Nice! Now, what about the frosting!!?? 😋
I made this last night:
1 package spice cake mix
1 package instant butterscotch pudding
4 eggs
1 cup water
1/2 cup oil
1 can (15 oz) of pumpkin — not pumpkin pie mix, just pumpkin
Add it all together and bake at 335 till center is set. Take it out and let it cool.
Make cream cheese frosting (or buy it), frost lightly and enjoy.
The pudding in the mix with the pumpkin makes this so moist. I bake it at 335 so the top does not become to hard. Great pumpkin flavor, not to sweet and so very moist.
Omg this sounds amazing! I love that it’s an easy hack but adds such a seasonal twist. Do you think this would work with other flavors of butter, like apple or even something like Nutella? I’m already thinking about experimenting for Thanksgiving now! Also, what kind of frosting did you pair it with?
Adding apple butter always makes it come out fine. That is how we used to do it here.
