Italian Beef is so tasty and can be made free of most top allergens!
Contains: Sulfites

Recipe (Serves 4-6):
For 2-3 lbs of chuck roast add:
1/2 jar of pickled banana peppers with the liquid (the liquid is crucial for an instant pot to pressurize)
Dairy-free Italian dressing mix of choice.

Penzey’s Spices Italian Dressing Mix:
1 1/2 – 2 TBS of the mixture
*This Penzeys spices seasoning mix does NOT contain added wheat, HOWEVER, it is also not labeled gluten-free either.

Good Seasonings Italian Dressing Mix: (Contains: Wheat and Soy)
1 1/2 – 2 packets. I tried just 1 packet and it was NOT seasoned enough. You can always add a little more after cooking too.

*I have doubled this recipe easily in the instant pot and used 1 whole jar of pickled peppers, plus the doubled seasoning mix.

Pickled Peppers:
This recipe does use pickled banana peppers, which do contain naturally occurring sulfites. That is not a top allergen in the US, but I know a concern for many people. The pickled peppers I get from Aldi are food dye free!

Giardiniera:
I do NOT know if this giardiniera from Aldi is free of mustard. My kiddo hasn’t been interested in it and I don’t have updated information. *I toasted the bread for my son’s’ sandwich using Country Crock since I don’t know if it is mustard free.

Slow Cooker:
Add all ingredients to your slow cooker and cook on low for 6-8+ hours.

Instant Pot:
Add all ingredients to the instant pot and cook on HIGH pressure for 90 minutes. THEN, I let it naturally release for awhile, until it is time to prep for dinner. I like to allow another hour or two, or even more! This is very forgiving.

Freezing: I recommend making and shredding your beef and then you can freeze it in containers with some of the reserved juices to keep it moist. It thaws and reheats wonderfully!

  1. What is your favorite way to eat Italian Beef? We usually have it on sandwiches, but I love it with mashed potatoes, too! I love to freeze the leftovers.
