Hi all,

We just had some Sashimi in the south of Taiwan. But what kind of fish was it?
Of course salmon and tuna are clear.

I‘m curious about the other ones – especially the yellow and black one.

Thanks!

The fish with the roe is Herring with herring roe. I like it as it’s oily and has a distinct fish flavour, a bit like mackerel. My wife does not. I hope you enjoyed it.

Yellow is Kazunoko, pacific herring roe (and I believe the fish with it is herring). The ones on the ends are maybe hamachi (yellowtail).

The English name has already been commented on, but if you need it again in Taiwan it’s called 黃金鯡魚 huáng jīn fēi yú. You can usually just order it by saying you want 黃金魚.

We also call the yellow one 尼信

All the people telling you stuff in another language like you can read/pronounce it always crack me up

The yellow one is herring with roe (fish eggs). Very common as a sashimi in china and Taiwan. It’s almost always offered.

Is it on ice? Is that common? I have never seen that.
