For those unfamiliar, this is a Pinot Noir from Burgundy – specially from vineyards around the village of Morey-Saint-Denis, by the producer (or in other words, the winery) called Domaine Lignier-Michelot. VV, or Vieilles Vignes, is “old vines”, and although that doesn’t have an official meaning, the vines harvested for this wine are indeed pretty old, mostly being planted in the ’40s and ’50s, with the youngest being planted in the ’80s.

My first time trying anything from this producer. Beautiful and earthy right out of the gate, if a little subdued and shy.

Leather and potting soil at first, quickly expanding to fresh black cherry, dark purple plum, definitely closer to a dark fruit spectrum on the nose but with a real sense of freshness. After a while the fruit and earthy tones merged really well, creating a gentle mushroom and stony mineral kind of vibe with gentle plum and cherry, dead classic burgundy, not super expressive but really beautiful as it gradually found its footing.

The palate was definitely brighter than the nose suggested- a pop of tart acidity, crisp fresh raspberry and salinity, not 100% integrated with the rest of the experience but certainly cutting through a cheeseburger like nothing at all. Quite a bit of stony minerality on the finish too, very refreshing and long, with highly elegant, silky tannin. Gorgeous and velvety. That dark, stony mineral tone was really notably increasing with air.

Extremely classic and serious stuff overall at a great price (paid about $65, would be happy even if a bit more pricey)- slightly austere and old-school without being difficult to enjoy at all, which is a pretty rare feat imo.
