Got to try this lovely wine from Austria’s Burgenland, a blend of Blaufrankisch, Zweigelt, and the lesser known St. Laurent Grape. My shop is considering bringing it in, so no price on it yet, but it will probably be somewhere in the $40-60 range.
Notes:
Straight out of the bottle, the nose is pretty savory and rustic, showing off a bright core of raspberry, cherry and vanilla. Within 30 minutes, these aromas mellow out into a lovely bouquet of black currant, cherry, dark chocolate, chili pepper and peppercorn. There’s a subtle floral element here too, but it’s tough to identify.
On the palate, notes of red cherry, strawberry, red bell pepper, and a touch of black pepper. Bright acidity is balanced against very fine tannins. This is a light and lively wine, but it still comes across as well-extracted, and the finish is long-lasting. I’m not experienced at scoring wines, but I’d give this lovely Austrian blend 92 points.
