My local shop had a deal on this so I grabbed it but don’t really know what to look for. Is there a specific appellation or classification of Xinomavro that exemplifies a Barolo?

Can’t provide a real specific answer for you at the moment since my brain is fried.

    But Kir Yianni fucking SLAPS.

Mr Yiannis Boutaris, the founder, died a couple of weeks ago. In Greece there is IGP Naousa (the title of the wine) for xinomavro wines. It is the barolo of Greece! ( Or for my palette closer to Cab Sauv).
It’s a great choice nevertheless and you can age it like any other wine. It pairs perfectly with some red meat and “heavy” food or plain with a plateau for a cold winter night.
    Waiting to hear your review!

Barolo is a region, the micro climates in that region are going to produce slightly different characters in the wines year to year. So anything Labeled Barolo with a DOCG designation would be nice to compare side by side.

Nebbiolo is a high tannin, high acid, high alcohol wine which is similar to Xinomavro, While the flavor profile will vary, Both wines will be highly aromatic with a medium to full body.

The baby Barolo reference is to the fact that its a very similar wine with a slightly lighter style than Barolo. A good Barolo will have a touch more texture and body.

  4. I’ve only ever had one Xinomavro. If it’s the baby version of Barolo, I’m gonna need to get several bottles of Barolo or other Nebbiolo when I’ve gotten my collection down to a more manageable number. Love that flavor profile.

Kir Yanni is up there, very good stuff. Keep in mind that Xinomavro is not made to be imitation Barolo. They have similarities but are their own things. Its more that of you like Barolo/Nebbiolo you will probably also like Xinomavro rather than that Xino is just a value version. Naoussa is the classic region(PDO) for Xinomavro, there are a couple more excellent but less well known PDO’s for Xino as well. Thymioupolos makes some very good Xino wines that kind of remind me of Burgundy, they are probably my favourite. Dalamaras and Alpha are also excellent. Many different styles, highly recommend you try out a bunch.

That’s pretty much something that’s just repeated in wine literature as a shorthand, simplified version to describe two grapes that are somewhat similar but ultimately different. That said, in some folks’ limited experience with Xinomavro (including my own) It can at least superficially resemble Nebbiolo in the sense that it’s capable of showing that unique combo of bright red, fresh, floral fruit and gritty, earthy, chalky tannin.

That’s about it, they are capable of sharing a relatively similar general character. But one thing’s for sure: Xinomavro is capable of great value reds. I’m not a tremendous Nebbiolo fan but obviously langhe Nebbiolo (and some Barolo, Barbaresco, and valtellina) is still solid QPR too, overall.
