    1996 & 2002 Krug Clos du Mesnil

Among other treats for the adults post trick-or-treating.

This was a very interesting contrast between two great vintages of the same wine. 2002 marked the advent of more accessible wines from Krug and this was apparent by how much “younger”, you could say, the 96 showed in comparison. There were of course tell-tale signs of age with the 96; its color and having slightly less carbonation, for example – but the trajectory of development between the two vintages could definitely lead others to mistake their age.

The 96’s palate consisted of a rich and viscous blend of buttered brioche, nuts and candied lemons, combined with a soft and prickly minerality and bright acidity. Very complex, but had a reduction that was more persistent than the 02’s – you can taste this clearly needs a lot more time to reveal its potential.

The 02 in contrast had an even more searing acidity to start, but this eventually mellowed out with time. It also seemed that all its secondary and tertiary notes of lemon oil, wet stones and walnuts were more readily available. Although it definitely felt like the 02 had a lot more room to develop, the 96 seemed to have had to work a lot harder to arrive where it’s at and reveal its deeper complexities.
