The inside surface of my kettle lid seems to be getting brittle and chipping off. Does this make the lid more prone to rust ? Also an obligatory picture of dinner.

That is carbon build up, it is not a part of your kettle. Try cleaning it once in a while

Just creosote, clean it off and cook on.
That’s totally normal.
Creosote, I use a 2” plastic taping knife.

I hit my lid with a grill brush every now and then to knock the loose stuff off. Nothing to worry about.

Normal. Greasy smoke burned down to flaky carbon. Looks like paint peeling but the kettle is baked on powder coating, warranted for several years.
Just cook on it.

Just wash it off and keep cooking on it.
Ball up aluminum foil to clean it off.
