Love it or hate it, Nouveau is a thing thanks to Georges Duboeuf. This year’s vintage is actually quite nice and a quality representation of young Gamay one can introduce to people before opening their eyes to the Cru regions.

Nose – strawberry and banana Runts, candied pomegranate, ripe blueberries

Palate – young red fruits, red dragonfruit, ripe mirabelle plums. Quite dry, being more acid-driven here than fruit-driven. The chalky minerality you expect from carbonic maceration is present but very light and upfront only, dissipating quickly to let the fruit flex into the finish.

Finish – medium viscosity that carries darker red fruit notes on a long aftertaste; tannins are firm and can almost be called silky. The balance of fruits and acids does not leave any residual bitterness, making you ready for the next sip.

It paired well with the goat cheese & arugula salad and falafel pita I was having for lunch. Happy Nouveau Day!

Just found out about this yearly tradition and tried it tonight for the first time. A fun little treat, and a very interesting wine, for better or for worse. Don’t think i’ve ever experienced banana notes in a red wine! I think I enjoyed this but maybe in a post-ironic sort of way. Glad I got to experience my first Nouveau day!
