    **Fried Green Tomatoes for Thanksgiving**

All these in the photo, plus some others that I cooked for supper last night, were from one strong Rosella Purple plant. Picked the plant clean yesterday afternoon ahead of low-30’s temps since I’ll be out of town for the holiday. Already harvested 6 or 8 more, when they began to blush a couple weeks ago. Total yield about 25 or 30 tomatoes. NE Texas, 8a.

The fruit are similar in flavor to Cherokee Purple when ripe. Very tasty and full-flavored. Average size of mine has been about 8 ounces. The plant itself is a tree-type dwarf variety about 3 feet tall. Rugose, regular leaf structure. I cloned this one and some other fall tomatoes from cuttings on 15 May, over 6 months ago. Started them directly in potting soil instead of in water. It was easy to get them going.

Most of the others eventually died from one thing or another after struggling through the hot summer. But this Rosella Purple just kept chugging along and remained free of major disease. (One Yellow Patio Choice also made it and is still loaded with immature fruit.)

Both of those plants are in 25-gallon grow bags, tan color, one plant per container. Sprayed them regularly with copper fungicide throughout the summer months, since my garden is in a damp location and historically prone to fungal infection. Kept them well watered and fertilized, mainly using Masterblend (4-18-38) with added calcium and magnesium.

I never have had much success with fall tomatoes, but this year I at least got a few.
