MARQUETTE, Mich. (WLUC) – People in the Marquette area were treated to a free Thanksgiving meal provided by the Salvation Army on Wednesday.
The Salvation Army baked fresh pies and prepared hot meals for the event which began at noon.
This free Thanksgiving meal has been a tradition for years. This year, they expected to serve around 200 people over the hour-and-a-half period the meal ran.
Bill Brutto, the Marquette Salvation Army head administrator, said the meal provides more than just food to those who attend.
“Some people aren’t necessarily here because there’s a need for food but there’s that need for fellowship,” Brutto said. “There’s that need for community. There’s that need for that impact in their lives because they don’t really have anyone else, so this is their family.”
Brutto said this meal is the Salvation Army’s way of saying thank you for the blessings in their own lives.
“For us to be able to give that opportunity to give back to the community to give thanks for all the amazing blessings that have been put in our lives and as an organization,” Brutto said. “This is why we fundraise throughout the whole year, so that we can continue to offer these kinds of programs and services each and every day.”
This meal is a small part of all the Salvation Army does to support the community.
Brutto encourages people to consider donating to help this important work continue.
“All of our red kettles support these kinds of efforts that we do throughout the Christmas season, so please donate today and all those funds go right back to Marquette, Alger, and Baraga Counties,” Brutto said.
Brutto is thankful for the community support and the volunteers who made this meal possible.
