I joined the “Melt your proofing container into your sourdough” club last night. Had too much going on between making three pies for Thanksgiving (maybe a little too much help [?] from my 4 and 6 year old boys), and while my bread was proofing in my oven (has a proof setting), despite the countless posts here, I nuked my sourdough and proofing container.

Luckily, has enough starter for a second set of loaves and it wasn’t too late into the evening to start over from scratch.

STICKY NOTE ON THE OVEN WHILE PROOFING FROM HERE ON OUT.

I have a sign that I put over the buttons to turn on the oven whenever I put anything in there for any reason with the oven off… because of how many times I’ve done this. LOL Welcome to the club.

Question about proofing in the oven. Do you just turn on the oven for a few minutes so it slightly warms up, then shut off the oven, and let the dough sit in there with the door shut? Is that the basic process?

Let us give thanks to the dough’s life that once was.

  4. Just put it on the counter like a normal person.

    Boom, next problem

Let’s stop putting your starter/dough in the oven. To me it’s a ridiculous concept, that will lead to a dangerous mistake like a fire. Start your bread a day or 2 early if it’s cold in your house, lol.

A similar tragedy last holiday season is what led me to get a proofing box. Best baking investment ever – proving is predictable and stress free.

Hi. Hard luck hope the text of your thanksgiving is hassle free.

You can make a dough warmer with a cardboard box and a lamp with an incandescent bulb

I have definitely made this mistake once before. Luckily the starter was in a glass container and with a beeswax cloth covering the top. I ran when I smelled the smoke. Everything survived!
