Looks like a manufacturing defect as you can see the oxidation on the sheer line, I’d call the manufacturer and send them the pictures , they might want to take it back for testing

Not a chef but I know a few things, I stayed at a holiday inn last night. This looks like a manufacturing defect tbh..

Thats rough, it looks like a pretty recent hook, I have seen this happen before, it was likely a much older mixer, I’m thinking 90’s origin. One of our line cooks was crushing up roasted lobster shells before making brodetto, we were all on the other side of the kitchen with a concrete wall and the exhaust system between us and the mixer but we all heard it when it happened. Sorry you are doing more by hand for the next week or two, sucks.

A little JB Weld and you’re good to go.

Recipe unclear. Substituted large chocolate chips with large wood chips.

I’ve done this same thing and got banned from the fucking mixer. Still bitter about it lol. The piece fit perfectly fine like every time, i was just the unlucky one it broke on 🤦♀️

All it takes is the bowl not set properly.

Can I save this pic so I can text it to my chef and give her a mini heart attack?

Did this mixing pasta dough in 20 qt. Hobart. Also ran the machine off the edge of the table doing pasta on another occasion.
A 20 qt. hobart thrashing around on the floor with parts in the wrong spots on second speed requires some caution. Just FYI.

Last time I saw this happen a fricken extern from a shit school almost had her arm torn off in a Hobart but that hook had some dark spots in the metal indicating bad heat treatment, but this looks uniformed in color and normal.

Pizza cook here, had that happen to me about 2 years ago. The hook itself was probably 15 years old maybe older. It was really satisfying to get the new one in. Yours doesn’t look that old, factory issue maybe?
DirtyPenPalDoug
How the fuck do you manage that!¿!?!

We had a faulty one do this, made a TERRIFYING noise when it happened – steel definitely isn’t meant to sheer off like that. We got a whole new mixer when they came out and assessed it, it was like Christmas.

Rip mixer shaft and gearing.
Jesus h Christ. I’ve been a baker for more than a decade. Never have I seen a dough hook get fucked.

I broke a spline of off the paddle attachment making compound butter once.
I’d post a picture, but that happened *before cell phones had cameras*…

Dang I always thought the Hobie would knead a breezeblock of you asked it to — I didn’t even know this could break, let alone due to tough dough

I hope you got a warranty that.

I have several questions number 1 being how?
