My first time buying Beach Cliff, I know this isn’t the best brand but I’m temporarily on a tight budget. I grew up on Sumaco, California girl and Asian brands like 555, Ligo, Dragonfly just to name a few. I’ll be having nothing but sardines and ramen for the next few months.

no shame in having to budget –
I have an alert on Slickdeals for deens, so when the Beach Cliff in mustard dropped to $5.50 for a 12 pack, I grabbed some.

Bulk pinto beans from Costco or Walmart are about the same price per calorie, but a lot healthier than Top Ramen. A little more trouble to cook though. Bananas are cheap healthy calories too. Eggs aren’t cheap, but one of the most affordable sources of protein per gram. Sardines are tastier though!

This specific tin is absolutely tasty. Catches a lot of flak but I’ve always liked them. I do add my own hot sauce. Sometimes the fish are nice and still together, sometimes it’s a giant can of mashed sardines, but it’s all the same in the belly. No shame

My local store sells bags of boars head sauerkraut for 1.99. Feel like that’d be good with them and healthy especially with the bean suggestion. Maybe some navy beans

  4. In my experience with cheaper sardines, the Great Value ones at Walmart are a lot better than Beach Cliff.

I got some Great Value sardines in hot sauce for $0.88 per tin not long ago and they were better than they had any business being at that price. Beach cliff is usually $1.35-1.50 around here and the last tin I had made me gag.

if you can afford it, just get the sardines in water and a GOOD hot sauce. The sauces in these tins pale in comparison.

  6. These made me queasy. I’d rather just save my money.

I love their fish steaks with green chilies.

Find a food bank near you. We have to register at our city health department in order to get free food. It’s just a few identification questions and how many kids you have type of questions. They don’t discriminate for anything. Everyone can get free food. But we need a card in order to get it. Churches have a good selection of food. We have monthly ones and a twice monthly one too. Call a church, and they will help you with your questions and help in any way. Good luck.

  9. Unless you have to buy shelf stable food, sardines are not a very cheap protein. Chicken thighs/legs are often less than $1/lb which is like 4-5 times cheaper than sardines.
