Confirmed: Herr’s Reaper cheese puffs are either SIGNIFIGANTLY less spicy than they used to be, or are wildly inconsistent.

I will say wildly inconsistent. I’ve had some bags where I can only eat small handfuls at a time because they’re so hot, and others where I can devour the bags and maybe have a slight tingle on my tongue.
For reference I am NOT a super spice tolerant person despite wanting to be lol. Habaneros are usually my threshold.

Yeah I used to love these but they went soft.

I’d recently seen some discussion/arguments here about Herr’s Reaper cheese puffs – some people were saying they were shockingly spicy, while others were saying they’re milder than Flamin’ Hot Cheetos.
I thought I’d chime in with my experience.

In May of this year I purchased a bag of them from a Dollar Tree in Asheville, NC. Over the next few hours I’d be making a long drive, and just wanted a quick salty snack with a bit of heat for the road.
Imagine my surprise when they started kicking my ass 5-10 pieces in!
I had to stop eating them because at that point I was literally starting to sweat & my eyes were tearing up. After a pit stop for a drink, I nibbled on them sparingly until I got home, convinced I had discovered my new favorite spicy snack!

Yesterday I finally found them again, this time at a Dollar Tree in middle Alabama. Regretting not buying more the first time, I grabbed three bags to take home with me.
I excitedly popped one open once I was in the car, and… they were NOWHERE NEAR as spicy as the ones I’d had 6 months ago.
I easily ate about half the bag, and it left my mouth barely tingling. No sweating, no crying, no need for a drink. They were – as had been pointed out here in /r/spicy – milder than Flamin’ Hot Cheetos.

In conclusion, it seems obvious that Herr’s has either made these things noticeably less spicy, or their manufacturing process is wildly inconsistent.
While ultimately tasty, I won’t be going out of my way to buy them again.

I’ve had these one time. The bag i got was very spicy definitely had a good thick coating from real reapers.

I haven’t had any that were particularly hot, but they’re really tasty.

I’ve had multiple bags of these and none are what I’d consider to be very hot, or even hot for that matter, but I do love the taste of them.

Definitely wildly inconsistent. Have had bags burn the top of my head off and have had bags that regular Cheetos would put to shame. Love em when they’re hot though.

I only recently tried them and felt like hot Cheetos are spicier. Solved the problem by sprinkling 7 Pot Primo in the bag and shaking. Now that smarts!

My experience is that they aren’t super spicy, but the heat does build slightly as you eat more. But, they are fantastic tasting (as is their jalapeño popper variety.)

They dropped the spiciest of their Red Hot chips as well. And increased the sugar.
They used to be my all time favorite chip, but now they are just OK.

I’ve only had them once, but I didn’t think they were particularly hot.

I just had a bag last week and literally was as spicy as a normal hot Cheeto. I was pretty sad. Either my tolerance is too high now or you’re right, inconsistent. Tho it was the first bag I had like that

I’ve had better luck with the Heb version but I’m sure they are made by the same factory.
