At Smyth:

This was one of those perfect restaurant evenings with great company, great food, and the wines all showed wonderfully.

2007 Salon Le Mesnil Cuvée S Blanc de Blancs

Fairly open for business with lovely nose with some ginger and scone. Exquisite palate with elegant bead and crisp acidity. Much more expressive than the 06 and drinking at prime, although it’ll likely stay here for some time. Super finish.

2007 Mugneret Gibourg Ruchottes Chambertin

Stunning aromatics with forest floor, umami, and pure red fruits. Surprising weight on the palate with more transparent and lithe fruit and zingy acidity. Very long finish. This built in strength over time and would have been the wotn on many nights, except…

2007 Rousseau Clos St Jacques

The nose was dynamite, just in your face “This is Burgundy” with the force of a Gerard Butler kick into the chasm. There was sous bois, white truffle, and all spice, and some ripe red and a few black plums. The palate was equally elegant, balanced, and complex. The finish was endless. Folks, this is a serious wine that’s also just delicious. One of my dining companions opined that he could’ve crushed the whole bottle, which I agree with, but I would’ve liked to spend all day with it just seeing it evolve and grow from strength to strength. I think this was every bit as good as the 2001 Beze from a month ago, and perhaps just a bit better.

Would you say Rousseau CSJ consistently outshines MG Ruchottes? I’ve never had Rousseau’s CSJ, but two of my best wines of 2024 were a Fourrier CSJ and an MG Ruchottes. I’m tempted to go deep on MG Ruchottes next year, but would love to hear your thoughts. I’m really attracted to the lacey detailed red fruits in MG Ruchottes – it’s 100% my style of wine.
