Past discussions regarding failed seals led to suspected quality of foreign lids. See the arrow pointing to a quality discrepancy caused where the red sealing compound is not fully applied, and resulted in a non sealing failure. From my antique collection see the a 40 + year old Ball 63 dome lid. Notice the difference in quality of manufacture. Inspect modern lids before sealing to avoid failing seals.

  2. Your old ball lid looks a lot like the superb lids I just got… I used them to can chicken broth (I think I did 13 maybe 14 jars in all – mix of pints and half pints). Unlike every other batch I’ve done for the last couple of years, I had 100% seal. 

  3. Doesn’t even have to be foreign made lids, I’ve had defects with recent Bernardin ones…not missing any sealing compound but the lid edge was dented in.
