My sister got our family’s copy of this cookbook. About 10yrs ago I found someone else’s copy thrifting and had to have it. Hadn’t paid it much mind but went rooting through it recently to find this cute piece of paper. I heard you guys would appreciate it.

And to the OP, I love that cookbook and so fun to find a sweet note like that. I love old things like that.

Hold up, is that starter being maintained with potato flakes?!

This sounds a lot like a starter my mother had in the 60’s for “Amish Friendship Bread”. It was sort of sweet, didn’t rise a whole lot, but it was all the rage amongst the moms. It would have been about the same time as that Rumtopf with the fermented fruit.

I have that same cookbook. I have no idea how old my copy is, but I can remember my mother using it when I was growing up in the early 70’s lol… Judging by the photos inside, I would say it is probably from the 60s or maybe even 50s

I’ve read about potato flakes as starter food! Let us know how it goes! I’m gonna try for fun. Maybe my 100th loaf.

Just when you think that recipe couldn’t get any wilder, it hits you with “place in plastic bags while warm”

  9. seeing that cookbook just gave me a flashback to my childhood, I know my mom had it somewhere
