Why are you holding it like that? ๐

Try loosely covering a small bowl or mug with plastic wrap, add rice, filling, more rice – then twist the wrap closed and shape the rice inside.

Making onigiri is actually a precursor to the techniques required to make nigiri. From the cupping of the hands to the amount of pressure used to form the onigiri. Truly good onigiri is absolutely difficult to make.
I have to say, that looks inedible.

Not great shaping, but hopefully tastes good.

They sell onigiri shapers at most Asian grocery stores I highly recommend it! (Great job on the first try! ๆ็ใฎๅคขใ่ซฆใใชใใง)

You need salt. Rub some on your hands before touching the rice, and put some in the water, it helps with making your hands non-stick.

Thatโs fun! Whatโs your filling?

I see rice sticking to your hands. My mom would dip her hands in water before forming the rice to prevent this. If youโre too slow, the rice will still stick tho. You just have to keep practicing ๐

Yeah these ain’t it. Try to find a guide on how to do it correctly. Rice is wet, less water. Try using a rice cooker. They sell shapers for these.

The rice seems really off, it’s supposed to glisten from the starch so it holds together. It looks like it’s totally washed off. Also, just a little tip, I usually use Saran Wrap so that rice doesn’t actually touch my hand. It makes it much easier.

It does really help to wet both hands and sprinkle salt on them. If you press and rotate, you’ll form a three sided slightly flat ball. Don’t be afraid to press and rotate and you’ll get the hang of it quickly. Good job on your first attempt! ๐
