I rarely buy bread but on the one-off chance I’m too lazy to make some from scratch, I see THIS. Gelatin is one thing but since when and WHY are there so many fish-based ingredients in regular, generic Walmart bread? I can’t imagine it adds any taste which would be disturbing if it did but even if the bread needed preservatives, aren’t there like a bajillion more to choose from that would allow everyone to eat it?

I’m shocked that we have to be so vigilant for so many different kinds of animal ingredients in our food. It’s sad honestly.

Man, that’s wild. If buying from a store then it’s Ezekial’s or bust—well, almost. I’ll get Dave’s if in a pinch or if I need buns.

apparently it’s for nutritional/health benefits, they add it (fish oil) as a source of omega-3s. definitely not something i would expect to see in the ingredient list of a multigrain bread. it’s disappointing and frustrating for sure, i would never have thought about there being fish ingredients in bread before seeing this /:

The Orowheat 12 grain bread is also not vegan (whey in the ingredient list) and uses soybean oil and soy lecithin for the same purposes (flour conditioner and slowing starch retrogradation) for which this is using anchovy oil and tilapia gelatin.

Even without the dubious merit of 12 grains, its simply not necessary for breads to have so many ingredients. Most of my purchased bread is the whole wheat lavash from Trader Joe’s. Great for salad wraps, can be toasted for a healthier cracker substitute. 4 ingredients: whole wheat flour, water, salt, yeast.
