I’ve posted about my Papaw’s cookies in the past. They were so popular at church. Hilariously turns out he was using “Eddie & Rodney Toschlog’s recipe.

I was flipping through the book, trying to find the cover so maybe I could get one on Ebay. I asked him what it was called and he told me it is a cook book the congregation at his church put together. The book seems to permanently be open to this page as well.

Papaw is 86. Just recovered from colon surgery and taking care of Mamaw who has dementia. He can barely stand up straight but that isn’t going to stop him from making his cookies!

Was this from a church in MA? I have a few that are very similar and actually use it quite often! They were handy fund raisers back in the day.

Those church cookbooks are the best.

This looks exactly like my mom’s that her mom gave her 👀

Update: I checked and they’re not the exact same lol. But it’s cool how similar they are!

I absolutely love cooking book corrections. The handwriting the updating. Just one of my favorite things to see

The great thing about these community cookbooks is that the submitting cooks are proud to put their names to their recipes.

Literally had to go pull our family cookbook to see if they were the same! They dont match but Ours is also from the 70s North Dakota. Seriously had to do a double take haha. Yellow stained pages and all

Have you tried the cookie bars? Thank you for sharing! Do you think it’s possible to get the rest of the Lemon Bar recipe pls?

Any time I see a recipe that runs contrary to what I would consider “established procedure” I wonder if there’s some recipe magic I am missing out on. If you asked me to guess based on the ingredients I’d assume you’d cream the butter and sugar together, then add the eggs, and then the dry ingredients until the dough comes together. Do these end up flakier than standard sugar cookies with the butter cut into the dry ingredients instead?

I’ve got a church cookbook from the 70’s I still use on occasion. Not low-fat, not vegan, full of gluten, but damn good food!

Honestly, some church cookbooks are really awesome. Most recipes in them are family recipes or recipes passed down. I think I still have a couple church cookbooks from my grandparents that have good recipes in them.

I’m commenting so I can come back to this recipe. Thank you for sharing this treasure!

I legit just found my Gram’s church cookbook over Thanksgiving! And it solved a mystery of why the Molasses Sugar Cookie recipe card she wrote for me says “makes 4 dozen” but I’ve never gotten more than 2ish. Her mom put the original recipe in the Church cookbook and it was DOUBLE in size. My Gram halved it at some point but never halved the ‘makes’ part. Also we had a good laugh reading some of the ridiculous recipes in there!

OMG RANGER COOKIES!!!! You just unlocked a freaking childhood memory. I’m so making some tomorrow 🤤

What is the difference between sugar cookies, and old-fashioned sugar cookies? I see the ingredient differences, but I’m unsure about how it impacts the way it turns out.

I collect old cookbooks like those. I go to estate sales and there are usually a small stack of church or community organization cookbooks pushed to the side in the kitchen. I love how you know by just looking at them which recipes were most loved.

My husband family has an old church book, they’ve been considering retyping it and keeping the old version as a gentle keepsake. I love flipping through and seeing all the recipes.

My mom has a similar cookbook! Black plastic binding, pages look yellow, and well used, pages folded over. Her book has the BEST cornbread recipe that uses yogurt and honey. That recipe makes me judgmental…against anyones cornbread. There is no comparison after trying that cornbread. Good ‘ol’ churchy cookbook making me hate any other cornbread
