I had to do Vaseline and cotton gloves every night to get rid of this and prevent it from coming back

    What the…

*looks at the backs of my own wrists*

Thank you for this “duh” moment.

Time to buy different kitchen gloves!

Aveeno hand lotion helps it go away, at least for me.

  3. NicoolMan98

Wait isnt Powdered gloves not allowed by hccp standard? I always used non Powdered nitrilE gloves

  4. Zestyclose-Salary355

Hence why I don’t use powdered gloves.

  5. Late_Instruction_240

I’m allergic to latex and this is how the irritation starts – if I wear another set after seeing this type of irritation then I get giant blisters

  6. meatsntreats

The powder is cornstarch. Unless you have a corn allergy it’s probably the glove material.

  7. Germacide

You’re not supposed to use powdered gloves for food handling … who’s doing your orders, and why are they dumb?

  8. ButterBeanRumba

I really thought the industry standard was non powdered nitrile at this point. It’s on your employer to provide you with proper equipment to do your job so tell them to order gloves for you that don’t cause an allergic reaction.

  9. PerfectlySoggy

Like, powdered latex gloves? I’m surprised you’re allowed to use those.

Where I live we’re not allowed to use latex, period, due to allergens. Powdered gloves are forbidden as well, so powdered latex would definitely get a few dings on the health inspection. Some people are also allergic to the powder in the gloves (corn starch), which can stick to your clothes, skin, apron, etc., and end up cross-contaminating the food.

If you REALLY HATE those gloves, call your local public health inspector and ask if powdered gloves are acceptable for food handling in your area. If they’re not, well then, you know what to do. lol

I once thought I was allergic to gloves, long story short it was actually mites.

  11. YourAverageGod

Sanitizer water probably fucking you up. It fucks me up proper. Also sweaty hands and constant washing.

  12. CaptainSnooSnoo22

At least in California powdered food safe gloves DO exist. The powder is cornstarch

  13. Admirable-Walk3826

They tried to make me use them once and that happened so I pretty much made my managers buy better gloves. That shit burns.

Edit- I see people saying its just cornstarch but idk if thats for sure because its usually not listed what the powder is on the box, I just know its irritating as fuck and it is 100% what is causing this on OPs hands- mine got so bad from
Trying to put up with it when we had them.

  14. PERDUE_316

Same! Shit’s annoying! Damn you, atopic dermatitis! 👊🏾

  15. raccafarian

I have hyperhidrosis my hands are small rivers, I can’t get non powdered gloves on

  16. Pillsbury37

cornhuskers lotion is your friend. it’s non greasy. get powder free if you can.

  17. broncobuckaneer

I’m sure your customers love that their food tastes like baby powder…

  18. voltagestoner

Mmm. Yummy latex in my food.

Also, bro, you’re allergic. Stop using them. 😭😭

  19. PissantShitbird

Tell your chef or GM to stop being a cheap ass and buy some black nitriles…

  20. Technical_Buy_6022

I used to get the same when I was a line cook. I really hated those black gloves, I used to work on the grill station and my hands sweat naturally and when I was working it was even worse. I would go through many changes of gloves per night, at least ten or so and every time I’d change my gloves sweat would literally drip out of the gloves and off my hands. It got so bad that my whole hand was just red and washing my hands with just warm water would cause pain. I eventually started buying and bringing my own gloves from home to keep the irritation from coming back.

  21. Patsfan311

Dermatitis and it could just be from moisture being trapped in your gloves.

  22. TBayChik420

Working Hands cream is the best solution to this. I worked in kitchens for a long time and it was the only thing that helped during winter when it got super dry. My hands would crack and bleed from the constant hand washing and gloves.

Even without powdered gloves this sucks but I cringe just thinking about powder going onto my hands when they’re like that.

  23. TheFlamingKite

DO NOT USE POWDERED GLOVES!!! They dry out your hands super bad if you don’t regularly use hand moisturizer.
In my kitchen we used powdered gloves and it took me until my hands started to BLEED for me to figure out what was happening.

Stop using the powdered gloves and use hand moisturizer for a couple weeks and see if that helps. I used a brand called Renew, it helped my hands a lot.
Use powder-free Nitrile gloves for handling food/dish washing.

  24. SpiderRadio

I would keep one of those small tubes of lotion around. It saves your cuticles too.

  25. bolognapony234

    Are you using nitrile, OP?
There’s a very uncommon allergy to nitrile gloves (I have it) that makes psoriasis- like, itchy patches on my hands.

Could be that, just wanna help.

  26. BIGGEST_GAYEST

Oof that’s rough. Slap some aquaphor or Working Hands on that and some socks on your hands at bedtime and you’ll be good in no time.

  27. WatercressSuch2440

OP, your work has to provide you the PPE you need, not the cheap shit they want to pay for.

  28. Raccoon_Dogg

Hmm i get this when i wash my hands way too often, it could be the gloves but their powderless and tends to happen when my hands get sweaty

  29. forbiddencarrot123

I just put cream and vaseline on my hands and im good, should be mad at whoevers not ordering you nitrile gloves tho

  30. HorrorGamer26

Same. In the winter, wearing powdered gloves and then going outside makes my hands crack and bleed. It’s so painful 😭
