I purchased some items from RTG after smoking some weed (we listen, we don’t judge) and didn’t remember specifically what I’d ordered. I just knew I was excited. I don’t remember ordering this and I am freaked out. Because I’m trying to figure out why the hell I thought this sounded/looked good?! I’ve actually never had herring before and the size of the can has me freaked out. Like is it one large piece of fish? And in white sauce? I can’t wrap my head around it. Anyway, if anyone has had this please let me know how you ate it and if you enjoyed it. If you haven’t, but are intrigued, let me know how you’d eat it. TYSM.

Herring in horseradish sauce is great, no need to be intimidated. I’ve had these with mashed potatoes and cabbage as well as on a toasted sandwich with tomato.

Never had it but Google had some good ideas.

    On crackers
A popular way to eat herring in horseradish sauce is over crackers.
    On toast
Try serving herring in horseradish sauce on a substantial bread like sourdough, rye, or pugliese.
    In a sandwich
Make a sandwich with herring in horseradish sauce on a baguette or soft roll. You can add accompaniments like fresh lemon juice, dill or parsley, and sliced onion.
    With potatoes
Herring in horseradish sauce goes great with potatoes, whether they’re fried, roasted, boiled, mashed, or on a baked potato. You can also add it to potato salad.
    With buttered egg noodles
Pair herring in horseradish sauce with buttered egg noodles and some vegetables on the side.

I’ve had their large cans before. IIRC, it’s 4/5 sides of fish and very good.

Herring has a distinctive, oily flavor that is often described as rich and full-bodied. It has a soft, flaky texture and mild saltiness. Its very good. Did you ever tried mackerel? If so its similar but more oily (fat) in flavors and its softer in terms of texture.

You made no mistake, it’s delicious and worth trying. On melba toast with scrambled egg, picked pearl onions, and some cold cuts on the side. Glass of your favorite beverage, and you have a great meal.

Just get high again and then you’ll want to try it?

Matt Carlson persists in—insists upon?—snorfling saucy fish straight from room-temp cans, but his review is comprehensive, and tons-o-fun, par normal. I’ll venture to add only that a few minutes of the unopened can in a bath of very hot water enormously improves the sauce here, as it does most canned seafood in sauce.

This can is pretty good, the sauce needs more horseradish in my opinion. Im a real big fan of their herring in creamy dill sauce

  9. fluorescent__grey

this is good! just get some nice sourdough bread to go with, maybe some dill pickles, too

or boil some small potatoes and eat them as a side

  10. Hope you update with your thoughts! We don’t get them in horseradish here but smoked kippers like that are common and herring is associated deeply with any festive season and very popular.

  11. ShaneFerguson

I’ve never had it but herring in horseradish sauce sounds delicious

I have this tin too but have not opened it yet. I love horseradish though so I anticipate liking it!

  13. Reechards

This can is actually really good, if you like other canned fish you’ll like this

  14. MightBeAnExpert

Just my 2 cents, but I love this stuff on Wasa crisp breads smeared with a good spreadable cheese like the spicy Laughing Cow or Boursin Black Garlic. Ordered a tin from RTG and will get a few more in my next order.

  15. love_and_nature

No suggestions but this made me chuckle, thank you 🤣🙏🏻hope it’s tasty!!

On some wafer crackers with a mild cheese. Maybe a little pinch of sauerkraut on top. Hmm. I’m gonna find me some of these now.

  17. They were pretty good to me and I’d eat them again. I do prefer sardines though..

  18. fullstack_newb

Sounds like it would be good with pickles and red onion?

If anything you ordered gives you second thoughts, You can mail them to me 🥸

  20. The horseradish sauce will be delicious – not like wasabi over-powering at all. I’d serve this tin over mashed potatoes with dark bread after I’d heated it a bit.

  21. Middle-Classless

Have it on some melba toast or heart crackers

  22. Bitter_Split5508

Some good, freshly baked sourdough bread, a thick spread of salted butter, then put the fish on top. Heaven.

  23. xdrolemit

I’d be so excited to try this out. Herrings and horseradish are two things I really like!

  24. This is actually pretty darn good. Eat it on crackers or on bread and make a Sammie.

  25. WorldlinessThis2855

Nah they’ll be good. I always try to get tinned fish in olive oil then put the oil on some harder bread and the fish with some fresh mozzarella or Barrada cheese, arugula, maybe some thin tomato and a little balsamic and, boom, I’m feeling fresh (:
