POCATELLO – What began as a small holiday gathering of family and friends decorating their side-by-sides, driving through neighborhoods to admire Christmas lights, and doing a little caroling has grown into an annual tradition, drawing more participants each year.
Ken’s REC World will host its 13th annual Christmas Night Light Ride on Saturday, Dec. 14, starting at 5 p.m. The event is free and open to anyone with an ATV or UTV.
Ken Hitesman, event coordinator and owner of Ken’s REC World, said, “Every year, more people join us. There’s no charge, and no registration is required. All you have to do is show up. The only requirements are that you decorate your side by side and obey the rules.”
“We’ve become entertainment for the community. Folks come out of their houses or pull over to watch, and many join us the following year.”
Hitesman noted that through social media and word of mouth, news of the Night Light Ride has spread far beyond the local area, drawing participants from as far as Utah and Nevada.
Hitesman’s idea is also gaining traction in other communities. High Desert Harley-Davidson in Meridian and Railroad Park in Mountain Home now host their own community Night Light Rides on the same evening.
Based on the reactions the event has gotten on Facebook so far, there could be up to 200 participants this year.
Participants should meet at Ken’s REC World, across from Pacific Recycling, at 3550 Highway 30 West at 5 p.m. for a ‘meet and greet’ and to review the safety rules. There will be a designated parking area for trucks and trailers.
From there, Hitesman will lead the procession through some of Pocatello’s most festive neighborhoods to see the Christmas lights.
Midway through the estimated 2.5-hour ride, there will be a stop for hot chocolate and cookies.
“I’m not going to reveal the route just yet. There will be some surprises,” Hitesman said. “We’ll also have some appointed judges and award prizes to some residents of beautifully decorated homes.”
“It’s all about promoting community spirit and having some fun for the holidays. We love Pocatello,” Hitesman said. “Please join us for a special night with family and friends.”
Hitesman opened Ken’s REC World in 2009 as a one-stop small engine repair shop servicing lawn and garden equipment, ATVs, UTVs, motorcycles and snow machines. Ken’s also sells UTVs and zero-turn mowers.
